I have been offered a Balao, but i don't want it, i want a Gar. I have loaded the game back lots of times to before i dock and am offered the new sub, but i get given the Balao every time.
Is there any way i can change the sub i am offered to one i want?
I'm using TMO and RSRDC
Thanks,
Keith.
No, you either take what command offers, or you don't get a new sub at all.

Well, in all practicality, why would you want a Gar instead of Balao? The Balao is the final class of fleet boat that you have access to, and Gar you can access from Pearl pretty much right from the start. I can understand if you just like the class better for various reasons, but me, I'd trade up for it anyways.

Is it possible to change something in a cfg file so you get offered what you want?

Just for looks really. I want a Gar with the later tower.

Well...I would suggest that you start your career in a Gar boat, and then just never accept the newer boats that will be offered. I've kept my current Gato, even though I've been offered 2 Balaos.

Deleted: I didn't think the Gar was available at the beginning of the war, It is.

And now for the idiot (that would be me): How do you know what sub you get offered? I only get a massage that I was offered the command of a newer sub... but no hint on what type of sub it will be.:damn:

Edit - unless you really had bad patrols you should move up a class...
When you're in the office configuring your new boat and recruiting crew, mouse over the small sub on top of that screen and it will reveal the boats name - and once on patrol, it should say the name and boat class on the crew management page. ( F-7 function key in TMO ) F-10 in stock.
You can pre-select what boats you get the option to command. After being assigned USS Drum for the umpteenth time, for variety I edited my cfg files with Notepad to have some other boats that I am interested in. I whittled down the list to about 20 entries keeping a variety of DOC - DOD (to be sure they were active and not sunk and on Eternal Patrol). Next career I'll pre-select 20 or so other boats in the cfg files for each class:
Data\Roster\\American\Submarine\SSGato.cfg etc, etc
For example, after several patrols commanding the GAR class USS Grayback (SS-208) in this career, I was just assigned USS Cod (SS-224). Not that there is anything wrong with USS Drum (SS-228):
"The DRUM can't be beat" (actual WW II slogan)

Just to add one thing to this thread: all of the boats belong to a particular upgrade class. When you are offered a new boat, it will be from a higher class number; conversely, if you are downgraded, you will receive a lower class boat.
Class 0: S-18 and S-42
Class 1: Porpoise, Salmon, Sargo, Tambor, Gar
Class 2: Gato
Class 3: Balao
And that makes logical sense. S boats were an entirely different design than fleet subs. Porpoise-Gar were all pre-war fleet subs. Gatos were being commissioned just as the war was about to begin, and Balaos started showing up in 1943.

I don't think we have any code for "downgrade" BUT if you return with a broken boat (as in 80%+ damage) and you're not mothballed with it, you'll get whatever boat is available - upgrade, downgrade or whatever.
Just be happy you're given another chance.

@Aanker
I think there is a misunderstanding.
I'm well aware of how to know what sub class one has after being assigned to it. To me it sounded as people could see what type of sub they get offered when the message screen appears that they got offered a new command.
I never know what type of sub it is until after I accept it.
It is sometimes a bit difficult to make a decision if you don't know what you are trading your old sub for.

Understood. - sorry, no offense intended.
After 1.5 (and even 1.4) was released I always take the new 'unknown' command. The worst that can happen is you get retired, or fired, and start a new career.

Hmmph. And here I always thought it was a downgrade when one returned with their boat all shot up. At the least, it should be a "equal or lesser class" when given a new boat in this circumstance.

I'm stumped - Reporting back that I was just assigned USS Balao (with no hull number) even though USS Balao wasn't included in my whittled down 'special roster' with hull numbers that I mentioned above. In addition this was in Jan 43 - before the DOC of the stock USS Balao in the cfg files.
Fixing it was simple enough in the leaving port save file - and I decided to test the theory of 'bad luck to come' if changing a boats name.
Edit: I changed the name to a different early BALAO class.
So, although you can preselect your command most of the time like I did for the GATO class USS Cod (SS-224), the SH4 game engine lets you know who the real boss is.... lol. - Funny.
Edit 2 - SH4 must have decided to read the UPC file and selected:
UnitName= USS Balao - which might explain why it had no hull number. My edited roster has the boats and the hull numbers.

If you have TMO then you can also get a Tench class the last class of sub made in WWII in late 44 early 45 in fact it is possiable to select a Tench from the start if you pick the early 1945 start date. Someone said that the Balao was the best you can get not true with TMO another plus for the Tench it has ST radar and hold 28 torpedos to me there is no reason to turn down a better sub unless you reallt like the one you are in but most skippers did have this option they got assigned to a new sub. And if you like how the Gar looks then you like how the Tambor and Gato classes look they are all the same externaly so if you like the later war cut down tower it will look the same on all 3 and might as well go with the Gato in that case as they can dive deeper than all but the Balao and Tench.

Looking back at it, it may be equal or lesser indeed!

That would only make sense. I can't really imagine a skipper, upon returning to base with a shot-up Gato, would be given a brand-new Balao to take out and thrash up!
