View Full Version : Subsim Meet Idea Discussion

Hypothetically Speaking Of Course...
We already have an annual Subsim Meet :yeah:
But what about a semi-annual - Regional Subsim Meet :o
we could split into groups like so...
Northeast Subsim (ME, Mass, RI, CT, VT, NH, DE, MD, DC, NY WV, PA, NJ)
East central Subsim (MI, IL, OH, WI, IN)*
Southeast Subsim (KY, VA, TN, NC, SC, GA, AL, FL)
South Central Subsim (TX, OK, AR, OK, LA, MS)
Southwest Subsim (NM, CO, NV, CA, AZ, UT)
Northwest Subsim (WA, OR, WY, ID, MY)
North Central Subsim (ND, SD, KS, NE, MO, IA, MN)
Once or Twice a year the subsim groups would host their own Subsim Meet where they would converge on a centralized location for a weekend of fun and comradeship. (not to coincide with the official subsim meet... and should be considered as an appetizer for the official meet)
We could all book rooms at the same hotel, we would designate a coordinator or "MC" so to speak... and since the event is regional, almost everyone in attendance would have transportation and/or cheaper travel costs as everyone would be more or less "local".
Each Group could participate in events for example... the South Central Group could go to Six Flags over Texas in Dallas... tour the USS Texas / Cavalla in Galveston or Visit Battleship Park in Mobile, Alabama.
Northheast Subsim could visit the USS Intrepid, or tour the USS Constitution. etc etc
The forum here could have new additions where members from each group could post plans, suggestions, ideas or itineraries. We would also post pictures of the events along with discussion and commentary etc.
Discuss amongst yourselves, personally i think it is a nice idea, and would be a bit of an alternative for those who cant travel across the country, continent or world once a year even though we might really want to.
I would be interested in hearing your opinions.
thanks
John

You know, that really is a good idea. I like it:up:
Having regional meets might give us a lot of options we might not otherwise have during the regular meets because we could have more of them and it would be easier on people's schedules. Perhaps we could even work in some fundraising activities for Subsim:hmmm:
The more I think about it, the more I like it. Hell, I'm almost ashamed I didn't come up with the idea myself. I'd like to hear what Neal thinks about it.

my thoughts exactly... might have to get into some sort of setting up of a non profit outfit though if we go that route.
im not sure what the rules are honestly there - if any.
but you're right... would be easier on folks schedules.
Neal's attendance or that of a moderator or some other Subsim higher up would be compulsory of course

You're the business guy, but I think that would depend primarily on how Neal handles his accounting. Any local fundraising activity would probably genereate untraceable cash revenue, which could then be given to Neal to spend on everyday expenses in lieu of electronic transactions. In turn, Neal could use traceable income to pay for his expenditures on the website and whatever else might garner unwanted attention.
Essentially, I think this could all be done under the table. We aren't going to generate any kind of revenue that would tip the Feds or the State off, and what business is it of theirs anyway?
Then again, if we have a willing person with sufficient knowledge of business law, we could do it legally for no charge.

im all for that... like you said it would depend on a couple of things.
... Im curious about what sort of turn out we might have at events.

At least two in Texas for sure:DL
But besides the turnout of subsim members, we could also attract new members. Family members of other Subsimmers, Naval enthusiasts, sim gamers...... depending on how we handle fundraising and other activities. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.
Most people will probably post their thoughts tommorrow morning. See where it goes from there.
Bah! you're just trying to boost your post count.:D
Not a bad idea but like a typical yank leaves the rest rest of the world out of your thinking.:D

Me?
I don't think.
Ever.
I've tried on several occasions to get together with subsimmers who actually live in the same area as myself. No luck.
But still, I wouldn't be against the idea.

So ya wanna go to the Northwest eh:
Seattle has: Bemerton submarine base, Undersea naval weapons museum, USS Turner Joy, Boeing Air Museum, Ferry Rids (Not Fairy rides, that's San Fran), and there's subman1's pirate bar.
Or-gone: USS Blueback:yeah:, Spurcegoose air/space museum, Tillamook Naval air station (WW2 blimp base), and deep sea fishin' with ol' fat McBee:arrgh!::haha:.
San Fran: USS Pampanito (need I say more:up:) SS Jehrimiah O'Brien (liberty ship), Fisherman's Wharf, USS Hornet, SF bay rides, Alky-raz.
Take your pick:yeah:
hey GR, if yer lookin' for adventure, Southwest has great ticket prices, I'll take you deep sea fishing and I'll pay for the Sprucegoose museum:hmmm:

I'd have to clear it with the SWMBO first but I might be able to host the northeast meet if there is one. I am:
about 15 minutes drive from Battleship Cove (http://www.battleshipcove.org/) in Fall River Mass,
about 30 minutes from the USS Constitution (http://www.ussconstitution.navy.mil/) in Boston,
maybe 60 minutes from the Submarine Force Museum (http://www.ussnautilus.org/) in Groton Ct,
about 45 minutes from the Naval War college museum (http://www.nwc.navy.mil/newportlinks/museum/museum.aspx) in Newport RI
and just a two and a half hour train ride away from the USS Intrepid (http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/) in NYC.
