Yes, it's finally here.. the free add-on to X3 : TC comes with a new set of missions and more bug fixes. I think the game is finally shaping out to be what it was supposed to be.

Nice! Still working on the hub, tho. :shifty:

EDIT: The update for the Steam version does not seem to be ready yet. :nope:

Someone released a plug-in to make the hub mission a lot more easier, you might want to try downloading that. The mission is way too crazy imo.

Thanks for the update dude

I did.. :D
Buuut.. the changes in the requirements take only effect after your current step is done. At the moment I am rather busy with the 470k ore. After that, it will get easier, thanks to the script you mentioned.

Game doesn't run on Win7. :shifty:

Anyone ever had difficulty getting it to run? On Vista, for example?

Box pops up asking to insert original disc. Guess Tages and Win7 don't play nice. :nope:

Thanks mate, you're the best.

You just made my day. Actually, more like my next few months. :D

I "tried" going to their website before, but the intro annoyed me so much I closed the window. Guess my disgust of everything DRM related got the better of me.

:salute:

This is why I like Egosoft and continue support them as they work on their titles after release for a long period of time, they are fully modable, and fun to play.

Very true. There my last best hope for PC games. They actually work with the community to better gamers experiences. Not many game companies do that.

Is X still a crappy flight model that works on rails? Does it have Newtonian physics? That was my biggest problem with the first and second one - they had fake flight models.

Pretty much

That goes for pretty much all space sims, except a few, like Independence War

The point of the X games isn't really about flight as much as it is about trade, exploration, station construction and management and all that

I have to say I find that a bit of an odd want. Real space physics (Newtonian is overly simplified) are pretty much never depicted either in TV or movies, or in games for a pretty simple reason... It would suck. Combat would consist of pretty much point and shoot as you cant possibly evade or dogfight. For example Starshatter uses simplified space physics but with some tweaking (you can change flight vectors pretty fast, and they capped the speed they can go pretty low. Also no gravity effects and thus no orbiting.) you can also very rapidly change your attitude (where your nose is pointing). As such there is not a whole lot of dogfighting to be had as you and your enemies can whip around and shoot regardless of what direction they are going, and what you are doing to avoid. Evading fire is very difficult, and fighters dont have shields (and get messed up pretty easy).

X3 is a decent balance I think, where the ships don't fly like they are on rails (it does take them a bit of time for the flight vector to match the ships attitude) and yet you can dogfight and evade fire. Its also fun (well other then annoying missile hits which send your ship spinning out of control, even if the missile hardly dents the shields).

If you want real space physics I would suggest Orbiter, where even rendezvousing with another ship in orbit is hard enough.

X3's flight physics isn't purely Newtonian. You can't go at infinite speeds for distance, but it does take a time for your ship to slow down (and it slows down faster if you apply reverse thrusters).

Think of it as 1/2 newtonian 1/2 Wing Commander . Works for me, because I seriously hated the ultra-realistic newtonian physics model in Frontier and Frontier : First Encounters.

For land/air/space navigation newtonian physics are plain awesome and interesting, i liked it in Frontier Elite 2 and Frontier First Ecounter and i love it in the most excellent Orbiter.

But for combat, at least in Frontier Elite 2 and Frontier First Encounter i always found it was awfull, as space combats were not fun at all in those 2 games.

Nothing like the exciting arcade space combat from Freespace 2.

A perfect space sim/trading/combat/nonlinear/etc... game for me would be one that would allow at any time to switch between Freespace-2 like fake physics for combat and Orbiter-like newtonian real ones for everything else.

Glad to see this update. Traders sitting in stations when there is a chance at profit just a system over is insane.

It is true that Orbiter hasn't incorporated some of the more advanced physics relating to space (such as the theory of relativity, you can break the light barrier in the game). So its mostly based on a Newtonian physics model.

However it is one of the most accurate simulations of space travel to date, something that I have yet to see any combat space game come close to. Especially one that limits your fuel.

So what? Orbiter gets boring quick unless you are playing one of the deep simulation addons.

That I have yet to see a combat game that models space physics properly is the point. There are a few that loosely model some aspects, but that is about it.

As for Orbiter being boring, well that is a matter of opinion. If you use mods there is lots you can do, from more realistic shuttles (and flying every real shuttle mission), to doing Gemini or Apollo missions, or exploring the outer planets and moons using a futuristic deep space ship.

Anyhow back to X3, a game(s) I also am very fond of.

Well, if someone is really interested in a space -simulator-, how is it possible to find Orbiter boring :
-mission editor to build your own scifi-real missions
-a record/replay system to view and analyse your flights/exploits etc..
-thousand of addons, so much that you will never be able to use them all in your lifetime
-re-enactement of real space missions as close as it gets
-possibility of making your own scifi scenario with futuristic ships
-possiblity to build some alien solar systems
-the whole current solar system to explore with every planets, satellites and more with addons to land on, hoover over etc...

So far it's been some years i am playing Orbiter, and i have not yet found it boring.
I can imagine if action and space battles is what you seek primarly, indeed Orbiter is not really the software you are looking for.

In such case, i highly recommend Freespace 2 instead.
