The old simle ideas for some games still are the best. One of these was the ancient genre of Breakout-games. At times, I like to play around for two or three levels with a good clone of it. But many aren't. That decides the quality of a Breakout game, is the "physics", means: does it make a difference with what part of the paddle you hit the ball, does it chnage the reflection angle? does it make a difference wether you strike with or against the movement direction of the ball?

I stumbled over this one, which is an older game, but I think it mayb eis the best breakout-clone I've ever played. The physics are what I want them to be, and there are plenty of amusing little surprises. Graphics are solid, but not en par with the latest in game technology, but that's not what counts.

This is version 1.2, which is free, and a full version. Be advised there is also a free but limited version 2 around (unlocking it in full costs you money), but just visiting their homepage sent my browswer into nirwana, so I advise caution. Version 1.2 will already serve you very well!

when I first realsied what it was about Santa Claus jumping around, I really had to laugh.

Okay, Skybird, I don't usually say things like this, but...

I!

HATE!

YOU!

Now how do I make this thing stop? I mean I can't quit playing it! It's taking over my life!

The oldschool fun that's been sucking my time is LEDhead.

Thanks for the link. I love Breakout/Arkanoid types of games. Another good one I like is Beat Ball. The first version is free. It comes with 120 levels. Some are extremely challenging.

I apologize, Steve. :D

The thing about Jardinais is that it has such a delightful, joyful balance in gameplay, and does not enforce a kill of the match by getting faster and faster, also the physics are like they should be in a Breakout game. I like it even more than the original Arkanoid II for Amiga, which I usually consider to be one of the very best Breakouts until today.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is another oldie but goldie, the unforgettable Man, Mr. Pac Man, in his Deluxe 1.7 incarnation plus level editor:

I find a bit of pong can do the trick as well. :D

I completely agree. I played the original Breakout decades ago, and Arkanoid in the Video Arcades that used to dominate the landscape. And you're right - this one is a blast. The insipid elf laughter and the flower pots are just silly. I'm loving this!
