N. Korea launches rocket, defying world pressure
By JEAN H. LEE, Associated Press Writer Jean H. Lee, Associated Press Writer – 11 mins ago
SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.
Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean government said. In Washington, the State Department also confirmed the launch.
The rocket flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said, citing its government.

Geez I bet the Japanese must be royally pissed about that one. Imagine if the missile malfunctioned and crashed on Japanese soil.

Unidentified South Korean official says it looks like it was carrying a satellite.
Wonder if the NKs are thinking of a FOBs type sat. AFter all this will be a low earth orbit sat if they have launched one.

What I would have given to see somebody 'accidentally' shoot it down :DL
If China can't restrain them nobody can :hmmm:
I vote for putting a huge lid on North Korea. Kevlar, preferably.

I'm surprised someone hasn't giving Kim Jong Il a new hole to breath through yet, its nothing less than he deserves... so many people have died under his rule, yet the complete indoctrination of the populus means that he's seen as their "Dear Leader"... what a load of utter BS. Does anyone have a rifle for sale? I feel like hopping on a plane to Pyonyang! :/\\chop
I wonder what the international response would have been if the Japs had shot down the missile? China and Russia would probably start their pro north korean rhetoric condeming them..

North Korea is no where close to being able to have an FOB.
Don't understand what the big deal is with this. This was just another demonstration of what North Korea CAN'T do. :har:
Right now, North Korea has a nuclear device (not a weapon) that does not work and a long range rocket that does not work.
I don't think I will be ducking-and-covering for a long time.
Oh, they launched it alright...straight into the Pacific... :har:

Japan would have been well in its rights to shoot it down. Heck what they did is practically an act of war. Can you imagine what would happen if they had lobed it over say US soil into the Atlantic.

They declared that the satellite launched successfully and it's up there now. That'll be the same that their state radio will be broadcasting inbetween messages of celebration to the Dear Leader.

I wonder what would happen if nobody covered (press coverage) these guys? I would put a NK missle launch on the same page as what Britney Spears did. Wait, she already is a front-pager. Nevermind, bad example.
Do you think if the world collectively ignored them, they would ratchet up the retoric?
Give us money, or we raunch missle!

Not exactly, you generally need permission or a test treaty in place to lob things through a country's Airspace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airspace), and countries do have the right to shoot things down that enter that airspace (which is why spy planes can be blown out of the sky). This is partly why nearly every space fairing nation has launch facilities that launch eastwards over an ocean (the other being so stages and other debris end up in the ocean and not on another country). Also North Korea is a rogue nation, and one can never be sure what they are launching. Given all of that Japan would have had the right to shoot it down. Since the first stage had a chance of hitting Japan, we know that it was defiantly not in outer space when it passed over Japan (and never reached LEO or better since it crashed in the ocean not long after).

What would be more appropriate given the world's response would be one of hans Brix! "we will be very very angry with you, and we will write you a letter telling you how angry we are".:rotfl:

Illogical, such an action would contravene the Prime Directive.
It is, much more logical to come to the conclusion that it was this gentleman who, in fact, altered the rocket...

A nice message from our good friends at the North Korean Ministry of Unintentional Comedy at the bottom of this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7991151.stm

The irony of the fact that this missle test takes place even as Obama lectures on disarming nukes is not missed on me.
