I have been to various forums concerning computers, tech-heads, and gurus of the computing world. Most have a 'show me your rig thread'. I though perhaps I would kick it off. Let see those super rigs and the everyday run of the mill beaters that have seen you through the years.

Can't I just brag about it? I don't have a camera... :D

Nice idea AVG, I'll just demand my brother brings his camera next time he visits. :yeah::woot:

*edit: :damn: Nice case by the way. (can't believe I forgot that )
Should atract some positive attention at a LAN-party, impresive light scheme. Should make tinkering a lot easier too (I've been known to lay on the ground next to my case with a screwdriver in 1 hand and a light in the other :ping:).

I would take photos of mine, but the only camera i have is built into the display.

Anyhow its a Dell Studio XPS 16 laptop (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-studio-xps-16?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs) with
T9600 Intel Core2 Duo 2.8ghz (6mb cache, 1066 fsb) cpu
6gb DDR3 1066mhz ram
ATI mobility RADEON HD 3670 512mb ram
500gb 7200rpm sata drive
and the usual crap (x8 DVDRW, Wireless-N (3x3), basic 16" display, etc)

It sits on a NZXT Cryo LX (http://www.nzxt.com/products/cryo_lx/) laptop cooler (if your in the market for a laptop cooler this one is top notch but meant only for tabletop use)
and plugs into a 22 inch LG monitor (i love it as it is 4:3 switchable which is perfect for old games).
I've got X-540 speakers, X-52 HOTAS joystick, 1tb My book USB hard drive, 7 port USB hub, and USB mouse and keyboard for it as well.

For a laptop its a pretty potent gaming rig, and keeps me portable as a student. Only down side though is with the standard 6 cell it only has 2.5 hours of battery life with custom maximum battery saving settings. Which sucks for my 3 hour lectures in rooms that don't have any accessible wall sockets.

I considered going with a 17inch gaming laptop, but as I need to carry it around to class and use it, i though it would be too much of a pain so i went with a 16 inch model instead. That though meant i had to sacrifice on video a bit. Still the video chip is pretty good, it can play most games other then the newer high demand games (Crysis) maxed out and can do the newer games pretty well too if the graphics are toned down a bit.

yeah...at almost 10 pounds mine would be a pain for school or commuting. Portable enough to move from room to room and that's about as far as it goes. It has a Kensington lock slot which would come in handy if I had to leave it alone for awhile.

Room for big fan at the top. They say these cases have better airflow; hot air rises. Hot air from PSU and other components rises to top and is exhausted by big ass fan. :D

Just a comment of curiosity!! When you look at the box layout all the cards are facing down so you only see the soldered side of the boards, wouldn't it be better to have the motherboard mounted on the opposite side so that you can see the component side, would look a lot nicer.:yeah: Maybe it's for dust purposes that they keep the components on the underside,:hmmm: Do they actually make a case with left & right reversed? or is this a left/right hand thing?:hmmm:

I'm just guessing here, but I believe that the reason the components on the cards are mounted on the bottom is so that the cooling devices have access to the cooler air in the bottom of the case. Just a guess.:hmmm:

I would guess a dust thing also. Imagine getting dust out of the diodes, Then again, there is a fan blowing across it anyway. Who knows.

Yeah I bet it keeps it cool. You see in mine the sideways mount for the CPU cooler? I was a bit leary about this set up and the performance. It works very well. Blows the heat back towards the larger exhaust fan. As you can see the intake fan right on top of the CPU fan area. Constantly pushing cool air to the CPU fan and the CPU fan pushing it out. You can not see it but behind the little radiator type deal for the CPU there is a vent that channels air to the mobo itself.

No, inside your computer. You have a large cable going to the back of the computer. Looks perhaps like a video out cable. There is a white and black one. Looks to be between your video card and sound card perhaps.

Reece

Ah now I'm with you, the black one is part of the Zalman ZM-MFC2 controller, it goes to a power box that connects between the power plug and the PSU for the power (wattage) readout, the whole unit is around $50,and is really good value IMO, the only problem is the colored LCD readout has to be viewed directly on or the display values will all show eights if you know what I mean, the white cable is just extra USB external plugs.

Some cases are ATX and BTX standard which means you can basically reverse the way the motherboard is mounted so that the expansion cards face up and not down. BTX was devised by Intel back when they were producing those hot hot hot pentium 4 prescotts. ATX was not designed for optimal coling of those beasts. Intel tried to strongarm the industry in ditching ATX for BTX but that didn't come to pass. So we are still stuck with ATX excpet for some specific (and costly) cases that implement both standards. Right now with cpu that are very efficient in terms of thermal dissipation there is no need for a BTX standard.

Reece
04-09-09, 07:16 PM
Thanks for the info goldorak, it's purely for looks but would be better for heat sinks etc to be facing up rather than down, I'll do a search for BTX but like you say, probably rare and costly, you'd think some Chinese manufacturer would produce some to see if it kicks off!!:yep:

Dosent your gpu get hot... I have a 200mm fan and 3 smaller fans (one stoped working).:hmmm:

Arclight
04-18-09, 09:56 PM
No hotter then it should. :rotfl:
Well, usually... :shifty:

Thing flakes out if core gets above 82C. Temps are kept between 60c and 80C always thanks to custom fan profile (idles just below 60C at 40% fan > inaudible). Memory can overheat though; some games put ridiculous stress on mem, causing it to overheat before the core warms up (core heat causes fan to spin up). F.E.A.R. and Assassin's Creed have this problem. Setting fan cycle manually to 60% or 65% before starting the game fixes it.

*ps: I think my fan setup helps; all fans are exhaust, except 1 120mm front intake. Every bit of hot air is exhausted fast, keeping internal temps down.

Task Force
04-18-09, 10:03 PM
Yea, my GPU had a heat issue. (my 200mm never worked, a cord was loose.) And my GPU Got Realy overheated. It almost locked up.:o Fan was full of dust.

Arclight
04-18-09, 11:21 PM
The fan on this card is broken; if you leave it to it's own device's, the fan never goes above default. Had to use Rivatuner to create a custom-profile. :haha:

Don't know if it's a problem with 8800GTS 512 in general, or just the ones build by Gigabyte. Seems a BIOS issue. :hmmm:

Don't worry too much about card overheating; as it overheats, data goes corrupt > driver crashes > load on the GPU is gone and starts to cool down. My card crapped out several times, first because of the fan issue and at other times because of that memory issue with some games. Push reset and all is well. Sometimes windows can still recover after driver crash and then it's even better. :)

I guess the move to 65nm process for the new GTS cards helped keep heat down as well. :hmmm:

04-18-09, 11:41 PM

Nice, and good to see it has 2 proper fans to keep it cool.

I rather have such design then those cased ones.

It should be the contrary.
Cards that have forced ventilation to push out of the case the hot air are much superior to those cards that instead just push the hot air around inside the case.
Forced ventilation in graphics cards has been one of the greatest innovations in the last years, its a pity to see it go away.

Yeah, thought about that for a while, but even the reference cooler with the blower fan and rear exhaust has an opening at the front that vents hot air into the case. The sink on this one is simply far superior (covers the VRMs) and it's quiet, something much appreciated.

It comes with a custom PCB, custom cooler, high-grade parts and factory overclock. All for the same price you'd pay for a reference design. Gotta love Gigabyte. :)

Oh and I already tested to see if it would overclock. 715> 800 core and 1800> 2000 memory no problem, stock voltage. So it can match all those factory "ultra-clocked" toys companies put out. :smug:

Right now I'm running a 5970 with that fan and temps are some 60 degree, just for watching subsim.com :88)
Running Silent Hunter shows temps between 85 and 90 degree. Which is not healthy in my book... :nope:

Tomorrow it'll be replaced with a fan similar to the GigaByte above and I'll bet temps will drop some 20-30 degree...

The card before this one was a Gigabyte HD5870 with same fanset as Arclights and that never ran above 55 degree running Silent Hunter with max settings.
ATI/AMD could learn a thing or two reg. cooling from Gigabyte!

Same deal with my previous 8800GTS and the blower design; almost 60C in idle, 70C-80C under load.

This one idles at or under 45C and climbs to 60C-65C under load. Quite the difference.

*Oh and that's with the fan fixed at 50%. I imagine if I allowed it to auto-control, it wouldn't even get above 60C. :)

Not true, I can see you've managed to get some cables in there :O:.

Could do with a vacuum cleaner to get rid of the dust though, or is that just a 'weathered' look :hmmm:

mine came like that out of the box :woot:

that Fan mod of yours looks awesome thought and seems to be able to keep it cool, hope it works as good as it looks.

Yeah should give it another dusting. I did check when I put in the card if anything was blocked, but all the grills and sinks are clear, so airflow should be fine.

The case is the one thing I "saved money" on when I build it. Should move to a larger case, but this one is the perfect height to put my legs up.

Temps on everything are fine. Not exactly looking forward to stripping and rebuilding the whole thing again either. :)

Bump to the thread :D

Just a quick picture of my current setup, with my newer gaming PC on the left and my old media (i.e. everything else) PC on the right. The division of duties helps keep things more stable on both ends, although as you can probably see in the picture the older system has quite a cooling problem and took more than a day's worth of maintenance in the last week to get back up and running after suffering several hardware/software issues. I plan to keep it running as soon as I can - it's just too nice to be able to optimize systems for different things, especially when neither is a real beast of power.

And the laptop is mostly something that goes to work with me, while at home it serves as my digital kneeboard when flight simming. Very handy :DL

If you're wondering what all the clutter under the monitors is, that's mostly airplane and tank models, along with other trinkets and souvenirs. And yes, that is a 1/144 U-552 toy with open interior - nice little window dressing :03:

I was wondering about that... I just installed the GPU and PSU myself and was debating between the Corsair 450 or 550, decided on 450 cause it runs everything and fit the budget.
Now I just have to install my new HD (internal one) and Windows 7 along with programs ect.
Sure beats the ATI HD3450 GPU, Dell 350W PSU and 700GB factory HD that came stock though.http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Oh, I just read through my post and I forgot to say that the internal HD is a 1TB drive.
