View Full Version : Manual charting in stock version - how?

I'm playing SH3 stock atm since I can't get my stupid Valve-delivered 1.4 copy to run GWX :damn:

I've got realism set to 88% with only God's Eye enabled but want to progress to 100%, as I find it childishly simple to plot and intercept targets with this crutch - but without this aid it gets terribly tricky.

How do I mark bearing to target on the navchart since there is no bearing tool as in the (partial) TDC toolhelp? And how do I determine heading and speed for a target BVR based on two or more bearing readings when I don't know the range?

Boy do I feel stupid.

Try a surfaced attack to start with. This way you can click on the watch officer and he will give you range. Its difficult to learn all aspects at once. After you learn about AOB and plotting the targets track you can then go on to estimating range using the stadimeter later. I did up a tutorial concerning parallel manual attacks not that long ago. The screens may look different as it was done in a modded game. But otherwise the steps are identical. Check out this thread:

I should have pointed out where to click to get range updates. After you click the icon for the Watch Officer, seven white icons appear above him to the left. The 2nd one from the right will give you the range to nearest target.

I don't use the WO at all actually. All I need to know is how to draw a bearing line quickly and accurately from my sub to the contact on the navchart in the unmodded stock game. The rest I can manage :)

You can just measure the angle to target from off your course. Extend a line out through your sub to show your course. Lets say your target is at your 320 bearing. Then use the protractor tool to measure the 40 degree angle to your port side.

Without range to target you can't get the targets heading exact. I'm not sure I understand this part of your question. After 1500m even if you have AOB and speed, without range you would likely miss. Range is usually the first piece of info needed in order to get speed of target and then AOB.

Feeling more stupid by the minute! hehe
Looking at Wasserman's manual charting guide, I suppose I can use the ruler tool with tool help enabled to draw an accurate bearing?

Otherwise yeah, I've "discovered" how to use the protractor, but using it is nowhere near as fast as drawing a straight ruler line from the sub with a bearing overlay.

WRT BVR targets, I guess I'm just spoiled by Gods Eye. Without it, one must pay more attention to bearing shifts over time to close to visual range.

Thanks for helping me getting my head screwed on.

I think you are looking for something like this:

http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches05/MooseMeasure.zip

It modifies the cursor graphics of the line tool to allow you to draw lines along all kinds of bearings. Also to certain ranges, but since the line tool allready shows numbers I don't see why he (Moose) bothers.

Or you could try this:

I don't know who made those 'reversed bearing'-scales. But I think every big mod has them as standard. (I made it from OLC Gui/GWX2.1 files) What I did was modify it to use with all mousetools that has some sort of line in them, instead of just the line tool. It's JSGME compatible. But let me know if it works in stock Sh3 too.

@Snorkle. Sorry, I guess I didn't understand your question.
