View Full Version : What type of SH3 player are you?

Hi,

Having read quite a few threads now, its obvious there is quite a diverse range of approachs that people use when playing SH3. I've formed the impression that many people here are quite serious (in a good way of course) about the realism factor of the game.

In order to quantify my impression, I thought I might start a poll to test the accuracy, or inaccuracy, of my impression. I also realise that with the many options and tweaks available to the game (some via 3rd party MODS like SH3 Commander), it's not possible to cater for every single type of setup/realism setting. So, I've made some very broad categories that I hope might suffice (please chosse the once closest to your indvidual approach to the game).

What realism setting do you use?
1. Extreme Hardcore : 100% realism + D.I.D
2. Hardcore : 75% - 100% realism
3. Macho Man : 50% - 75% realism
4. Tough Guy : 25% to 50% realism
5. Super Soft : 0% to 25% realism

I'll go first ,and vote 5. :D

Thanks,
Dud

Realism 85% because I turn on external view and scope stabilization (historically correct) + DID + Manual Navigation.

Guess that makes me an extreme harcore player.

#2 + DiD. I'm too lazy not to use the Weapons Officer. I'm finally weening myself of the external views, but there I am.

84% + D.I.D. I use the god's eye (which im thinking of turning off)
and weapons officer assistance. I wont say no if you tell me to do manual on a shot and i will probably find my target if its less than 5000km but i believe that 100% is too much for one man.

:rotfl: @ Neal

Compared to that I'm soft as baby cheeks :har:

Okay seriously I play at 85%. Weapon officer assistance on to identify targets, scope stabilization on for OLC gui and external view for eye candy. I guess I play D.I.D because I just started a new career after I was sank. I just haven't thought about it before.
And I use manual navigation and I'm going out there to do my job, but most of all I'm trying to bring my crew back home.

I have my own recognition manual, I occasionally plot attacks on paper using pencil and compass and strait edge, I time ships by stop watch, and even have one notch on my belt for a 1x time compression patrol of about 2 weeks duration.

100% realism, but don't play DiD. I don't want to spend several evenings just to lose my life. After all, I'n also expending my real life! It's only a game...

RoaldLarsen

See my sig. I tweak several config files via SH3 Commander for even more realism regarding equipment availability, patrol areas, sensor capability..., and I impose additional restraints on myself in areas the game does not model, such as reloading torpedos from external storage, max snorkeling speed, etc. I patrol the area BdU sends me to. I adjust my TC to reduce sightings of ships but maintain numbers of aircraft attacks.

When I lose a sub, I don't start over at the beginning of the war, when life is relatively easy. My new career starts up where the last one left off, but with a rookie crew. If a Kaleun retires, my replacement career gets a somewhat more experienced crew than rookie but usually not nearly as experienced as the retired one.

I don't do my own star sightings or other advanced navigation.

So maybe that makes me about a # 0.6

I like external views and I use 'God's eye view' as I find the errors in the stadimeter too frustrating.

#2+DID.
External on, but use it only for screenies. Well, almost only for that...
Gods eye on and no, I´m not going for manual targeting but I have no weapon officer helping me. Makes 80%.

Is that semi realistic:hmmm:

#2 at 86%, D.I.D like Roald Larsen, Gods Eye ON, everything else off.
TC usually below 128 except for empty homeward runs.
Hoping to understand how to plot 100% manually soon.
Full manual torp setting in the TDC, not even using the datapad.

I'm assuming "DiD" means "Dead I'm Dead." Been here 5+ years or so and never saw that term used here before.

In any event #2. It isn't "realistic" for the captain to madly rush from station to station like he's the only competent crewmember on board (or the only one on board).

80% + DID.I don't like manual targetting and I don't think it was the captain's job anyway was it?I do have a house rule though that I must have sight of the target for at least five minutes before I can launch unless it's very close range. Not sure how realistic this is.
For me DID is the thing that generates the excitement. That's where the fear and the joy comes from.It hurts when suddenly it's all over but it's all good character building stuff.

How odd, considering all the threads devoted to it. It simply means "Dead is Dead", meaning you've died, the career is over and there is no way you would resurrect it by reloading an earlier save.

1. Extreme hardcore, but the WO does the recognition for me.

I've never managed to survive the war. I was always depth-charged to death. This hedgehog is deadly accurate. You may survive the depth-charging but you will not make it if the destroyer attacks with the "hedgehog" thing as well. Now, if there is another destroyer around... kiss your officers and confess your sins ; the black ripper has come to visit you. :-?

Anyway, that's just me.

#2, DiD. I keep the external camera mainly for screenshots. Never had much use for auto targeting - it is a lot of fun to "eyeball" my torps.

I love old games like "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe", where there's no way to resurrect your guy (without modding tools). I still remember getting my P-47 ace killed on his second-to-last mission when I was 11 years old. :rotfl:

Dead Is Dead. If you die your career is over - no reloading saved games to 'save' a kaleun you like just because you can.

I've re-evaluated what type of player I am. I decided i am DIDID. Which means once I get killed I quit playing, since in real life you only get one chance. I didn't count DID's from silly stuff like hitting bridge Pylons and micro islands while at TC. The simulation plays true. A real life Kaluen had no chance of making it through the war. Now that I got my history lesson, I may mod the game instead of playing it. Only playing to game test. But since the weather here is finally nice. Probably won't be around till next winter.

Well, there are times when Dead is NOT Dead, such as when for some unexplained reason the Kiel auto-transit in GWX runs you into the shore and you die. Or when you reload the game and it runs you into the bottom for no apparent reason.

I'll reload a career if either of those things happen. I've only slammed into the shore once during the Kiel auto-transit & only experienced the dreaded "crash dive of doom" once that I can remember. Otherwise I play DiD.

I've actually gotten board with the game. Its probably just tooling around in the harbor listening to gramophone tunes when I get back to it. Or I will go back to GWX and look for schools of Dolphins. Too bad we can't go fishing for Sailfish or something.

95% "god's eye" and DID. Goal is to survive and bring crew home---unfortunately that hasn't happened too often. just finished my first career with GWX3 -- three patrols sunk while trying to engage my first real convoy attack Oct 31, 1939. I have mainly concentrated on easy pickins, ie single ships.

no. 3 - 65% - I like to delegate responsibiblity to my very good officers. Also, the technical guys are wizards with those torpedoes - which give zero duds.....:DL.

Not to talk about the outside view which is a major part of the entertainment.

applesthecat
05-10-09, 08:32 PM
I think the goal of gaming is entertainment, and the external views add to that, even though not being true to life, so I include external views. Seeing your torpedo race towards the target, not knowing if it will hit is a joy the real uboat guys didn't have. Why rob yourself of that joy if the point of gaming is entertainment? Increased realism doesn't always translate into increased enjoyment. Sometimes in the quest for realism, we lose the plot.

BTW, what is DID?

DID=Dead Is Dead

You die, you don't play the game again for a year and a day!:D

Just kidding:
You get sunk, you don't reload a previous save-unless you died because of some stupid TC thing or computer issue. You start a new career, not necessarily from the start of the war again though. I start from the next month. I want to expereince the whole war.

I'm a MBvM-Player. MBvM = Mad by the variety of Mods. Since I found this forum, I've never played SH3, because I spent all my "playing time" with trying and testing all available mods, making my own little tweaks, making my own (not very famous) hsGUI and so on, all in order to get my "most realistic" game, which I still have not. It really drives me crazy, but there will be a stop point now. Some little changes to ship and submarine acceleration/deceleration and some little improvements to my hsGUI, and then .... SH5 perhaps comes out and I can put all my work into the trash.
