Rigged For Dive! was originally created by website manager Neal Stevens as a core piece of his Submarine Almanac series of books.

:rotfl:

The "run cheap" part makes it almost credible.

Damn! Just the thought of rigging that baby for dive....Eh, I figured they would use the Pompanito again if they ever made a movie like that anyway.

Hi Neal,

Having worked in The Industry for over a decade, I gotta say your story premise (assuming it is yours) is as commercially-viable as any I've seen. Have you actually shopped it around to agents & producers? Heck, if the script doesn't actually exist, I would write it, for sure!

One of the obstacles to selling it would be the budget, of course. Even if the Navy or a submarine museum were to provide the old sub and ASW ships/planes for free, shooting in/on the water (not to mention in foreign countries) is inherently expensive. Producers & studios tend to be risk-averse when it comes to unknown writers. That's when insider connections make the difference -- particularly knowing A-list talent.

All that effort for a hoax? Why not make it real? At least get it optioned. People do! :yeah:

I dont know. I think it is a good idea too; but with CGI you can do almost anything. Don't forget the unforgetable movie "U-571". It is still possible... as long as I get to be in it!:yeah:

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Schöne. :yeah: Yes, the whole story concept is mine and original. I'm kinda proud of it, I think it would be pretty interesting to explore as a movie idea.

Actually, when I dreamed up this year's April Fool joke, it was sometime last summer, maybe late May. I was talking about a pooling the resources of the SUBSIM community and buying that old Kilo that keeps coming up for sale on the web (if 2000 guys send me $125 each, we can raise $250,000, buy the Kilo and have $100K for replacing valves and wiring, overhauling the diesels, etc).

I registered the fake movie news domains and dreamed up the story. I told my gf, what would really be cool is if somehow an agent came across the fake screenplay and suggested I write one based on it... and yeah, in the perfect world, it would get made into a film... and I would get a big payday and then actually buy the sub and make the sub crusie ship... just like the fake story/actual movie... you can tell I like to dream, can't ya? :D

Hi Neal,

I had a feeling you might be hoping for such an outcome when you made such an elaborate frame for your story idea. Hey, stranger things have happened!

Tell you what: I have collaborated long-distance on a screenplay before (and have won awards in writing contests, FWIW). My girlfriend, btw, teaches screenwriting for the Academy of Art University. After I have finished my current project -- a biopic about T.E. Lawrence -- I should have enough time to work with you on an actual script of Rigged For Dive for a shared credit, if you're interested.

Regarding connections with actors who could help get this made, I have a few, but our best connection of all may be in the Navy. All branches of the military collaborate with Hollywood, and veterans may enjoy a credibility advantage with such people:

Give it some thought... Do it only if you think it'll be fun, because everything else is make-believe till the check clears.

Mach's gut,
Wayne

You're on, Wayne, and it will be fun, regardless of the outcome.

PM me when you are ready to begin. For now, I'll work on the outline.

Who knows? Wouldn't it be cool for people to say, Remember that thread where Schöneboom and Neal were talking about fleshing out the April Fool's script? ... and now here we are at the local cinema to actually see the film!

That in itself is sufficient motivation for me :shucks:
