Very impressed by the sonar image of U-864.
You can make out that it's an IXD2 very clearly (you can make out the two half cylinders on the aft section!) Also looks like the Turm got blown off from the torpedo strike.
But after a little bit more looking at the image. I think I found the Turm. It's laying on it's side in the debris field by the aft end.
Going to save that image and highlight my findings.
Very impressive photo archive you've got U796. Still got a ways to go too, Not even in the 1000s :o

Bonjour U796,
Merci encore.

I'd like to thank the guy who took so much time to give us pictures of many of the u boats commissioned in WWII
Doing so enabled me to reassign my boat # to one that was in keeping with my IX B, and now brings a more tangible quality to the role being played. Cudos!

Sure thing. =)
U-779 was transfered to Operation Deadlight, after being surrendered. U779 was never a front boat, so that makes it somewhat more difficult to find anything about it. =(

.......But you can find everywhere with Google....
Do not forget the other search engines, U796. Sometimes I have found treasures Altavista, Google showed me not. Weird but true.
And repeat the search occasionally gives surprising results.

It may be U-72 (Sander), as a trainings boat in the Baltic. Someone posted this pic in a different forum and asked the same question.
Can you help me to identify these U-Boats ? : :hmmm:

Dear U-796, remind that this U-Boot is the U-617, commanded by Albrecht Brandi, I realized a capture of my display in this film: 1943-08-11 - Die Deutsche Wochenschau Nr. 675 (http://www.archive.org/details/1943-08-11-Die-Deutsche-Wochenschau-Nr.675) 08:32 > 09:15 emblem of U-617.
This is the cause of the poor quality of this image....

Does anybody have pictures of U-486 (Type VIIC/ 11th Flotilla/ Oblt. Gerhard Meyer)?
Or know how I could obtain a copy of the boat's KTB?
Or know how I could obtain a copy of the boat's KTB?
US National Archive in Virginia should have a copy, if it was a front boat. You can also try the Bundesarchiv, Abteilung Militärgeschichte, Germany. A copy should also be in The National Archives in London.

Thanks Thomen! I'll have to look into those. I know for sure that the UK National Archives has files related to the Admiralty's inquiry into the sinking of SS Leopoldville - which is where my interest is with U-486.
It was a front line boat (albeit very late war) - and was sunk in April '45 near Bergen with all hands lost.
When I check the UK National Archives -- should I search for anything special when I look for the KTB? Or would U-486 KTB suffice?

The best way would probably be to make an email inquiry. Never had much luck with the search functions, myself.

Hi U 796.
I have just come across this forum and see reference to U 518 being attacked on 27 June 1943.
You may care to contact me about this occurrence. For me it is very interesting.

Leutnant zur See Wolf D. Danckworth...sole survivor :

The First Lieutenant was Leutnant zur See Wolf Dietrich Danckworth, of the 1938 term. He was the sole survivor. He joined the navy in December, 1938 to Stralsund, where he underwent preliminary disciplinary training for five months. This was followed by four months in the sailing training ship "Albert Leo Schlageter." In June, 1939, he was promoted officer cadet and drafted to "Schlerwig-Holstein," in which he remained until August, 1939, when he went to the Naval College at Flensburg. Here he went sick and was granted extended leave. In spring, 1940, he went to the Naval College at Kiel and then returned to Flensburg to complete his unfinished course. In September, 1940, he was appointed to the ex-Norwegian torpedo-boat "Leopard" (formerly ("Balder"), whose duties were escorting U-Boats on tactical exercises in the Baltic and later convoy work in the Kattegat. In spring 1941, he was promoted Senior Midshipman and volunteered for the U-Boat arm, proceeding to the 1st U-Boat Training Division at Pillau. In June, 1941, he proceeded to Flensburg and then back to Pillau taking courses at both places. He was commissioned in Autumn, 1941, when he was appointed First Lieutenant in "U 72" a school boat commanded by Kapitänleutnant Meer, with whom he remained until the commissioning of "U 224."
Danckworth was due to be given his own command after this patrol, but had asked to stay on for another two patrols, as he thought he could learn so much from Kosbadt.
(Note: Wolf Danckworth is 93, alive and well, living in Germany, speaks-writes English, communicates well with his computer: 09-15-2010)

:DL
Félicitations pour ta patience ! :ping:
I guess i might as well dump my collection.
Sorry if some of them are reposts.

Thank you to all who submitted their photos. They have helped me in my research and quest to find my ancestors and get a brief look into their lives. God bless you all...those who passed and those who remain. I will post photos of my model submarines on site when they are ready.

Hi guys , fantastic pics.
I saw a Vlackveirling on the winter garden of a type 7. Does anybody know if these were ever fitted to the VIIC/41?
Cheers

I don't recall them ever being standard on the VIIC/41; however, kaleuns had alot of discretion in regards to anti-aircraft armament. I see no reason it wouldn't/couldn't have replaced the flak cannon. Will keep an eye out for photos.
EDIT: I recently discovered that the boat I am building, Type VIIC/41 U-297, had the Flakveirling. No pics, unfortunately.

There was a special sort of U-Boat called "U-flak boats" U-221 , U-263 and U-271 where some of these sort, but returned to duty as traditional VIIC attack boats.

I think the most U-Boats used the Zwillings Flak. And the most used to dive and don't try to destroy the planes. :hmmm:

Thank u so much !!
This means a lot to me, as U-262 (K.L. Heinz Franke) was the U-Boat that sunk the Norwegian Corvette "HNoMS Montbretia (K 208)" on 18.11.1942, where my grandmother's oldest brother, Quartermaster "Einar Meier Larsen", was killed together with 46 other crew members. (ONS-144)
A spanish member from this forum, told me some few years ago, that "Montbretia" lies at a depth of nearly 4000 meters.
My grandmother's brother, was off-duty and asleep when their boat was torpedoed.
A very sad story that my grandmother (died in 2008 as a 93 year old) never liked to talk about, and she always started crying.
My avatar also shows Heinz Franke.
The photos of U-262 are very interesting, and I will defenately save them !!
A million thanks, U796 ! :sunny:

Hello all
This is my first official post on this forum. This thread has a fantastic group of U Boat photos. I am chasing some photos of U Boat 62 and
U Boat 3032. A friend of mine has made friends with a 90year old veteran U Boat member. He served on both boats as a machinist or engineer. He doesn't have any photos of his boats as he lost them just after the war.
Could anyone help with some photos of these Boats?
Keep the awesome work going.
Cheers

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
Unfortunately the person who put the pictures up in the first place has to leave them there. If his account is getting full he can either pay for more space or take old pictures down to make way for new ones. If he takes them down they're gone forever, unless he puts them back up and re-links them.
Hello.

Hello Friends!
My English ist very bad, sorry.
