View Full Version : Our Priorities Are So Screwed Up

Yesterday, the wife and I went to see the new Nicholas Cage movie, Knowing, rated PG-13. It was fairly creepy and had an interesting premise, although the last 1/4 of the film was a bit hokey...

That being said *Mild Spoiler Alert*, there were scenes in the movie involving many deaths (a plane crash, subway derailing, etc). Sure, they didn't show much in the way of brains and gore flying around, but there definitely was some pretty graphic images (some blood, people on fire, people getting mowed over by heavy equipment, etc).

So, we got to thinking: had the movie been otherwise santized of all violence, but contained a sex scene, it would have be MPAA Rated R, no doubt.

Seriously?

Death and destruction is PG-13. A nipple is R.

Yeah, our priorities are screwed...

I thought of this the other day when watching the Sopranos on day time TV, on A&E. They muted the guy with the gun cursing, then showed you in graphic detail as his victims forehead was pierced with a bullet ejecting the contents of his head onto the wall behind. Quite a bizarre set of priorities indeed....

Yup I never understood this either. When I was stationed in Germany, I definately appreciated how nudity was viewed as perfectly natural and not a big deal. I would rather our society be more desensitized to nudity/sexuality and appalled to violence instead of the way it is now. Perhaps people would be less willing to go shoot up a crowded space.

When we were kids my friends and I tried(and often succeeded)sneaking into 'R' movies all the time. I can tell you it wasn't to see violence!:D

It is silly though that we condone kids seeing depictions of violent acts, but heavens no don't let them see a boob.

:har: good one. Yeah, priorities are a bit off kilter. I think the rating system for movies is wide open for interpretation.

The same thing that would happen if you posted a pic of someone's brains splattered all over a wall.

This is one of the things that at least scandinavians really don't understand. We have movies with full frontal nudity (not just sex but people who happens to be naked for any natural reason) with 11 year age limit. But violence and "strong scenes" generally makes a film rank 15+ or 18+

Posting light nudity would get you a pretty good slap on the wrist, same with light graphic violence (video game violence is a bit of an exception obviously). Sex/Gore would be much more harshly treated. So we treat it pretty much equally here.

I have to agree that its pretty screwed up of our societies to condone depictions of violence over that of sexuality. Though I don't think that if we made the switch from gratuitous violence to gratuitous pornography we would solve much. Both have strong negative qualities and destructive results for the audience. But there is nothing wrong with real love and sexuality.

Ah my favorite kind Tribesman, aren't they cute :D

Our tv is pretty much similar to US tv, namely because we get 90% of the tv-series from the US. But I agree, it is a strange double standard.

Actually got me thinking, I wonder what it would look like if our Finnish tv channels wouldn't buy any series from the US and all the cop/hospital/csi/etc. series would all be made domestically. Would there be more sex instead of violence in them? Possibly, but also lots more booze drinking. :)
