Hi guys,

I'm hoping for some guidance here! :88)

I've played IL2 a couple of times and been generally unimpressed with it. Possibly because I did quick flights, couldn't find the enemy, didn't understand what to do, didn't know half the controls and generally I just left with a badtaste and uninstalled it.

After reading 'The Forgotten Soldier' I now want to come back to IL2 fresh faced. Are there any mods/add ons/downloads I can add to my IL2 to make it a great experience?

How can I do a campaign mode? Ideally i'd like to be a German pilot and go right through to the end of the war. Is this possible?

Thanks.

Let's start by figuring out which copy of the game you have. There's the original IL2 Sturmovik, Forgotten Battles, Pacific Fighters and the complete pack IL2 1946.

Hi there Dowly, I have IL2 Sturmovik. My apologies for not specifying

Ok.

I quickly searched the IL2's site, but couldnt find any patches for the stock IL2 Sturmovik (cant remember if there were any). As for addons, you might want to buy the IL2 1946 which has everything officially released from IL2 Sturmovik to Pacific Fighters. Getting the IL2 1946 is also the only way to start enjoying from all them wonderful mods (there's some mods for the earlier versions, but the modding is 99% based on IL2 1946). It's very cheap nowadays, so get that, patch to 4.08m, download the Unified Installer 1.1 mod and start flying.

EDIT: Here's some comparisation on what you get with IL2 1946

IL2 Sturmovik plane count (unflyable & flyable): 71
IL2 1946 plane count: 347

IL2 Sturmovik map count: 7
IL2 1946 map count: ~20

And of course, new flight model etc. etc.

Thanks for that.

If I purchase 1946, What will I be able to do in regards to Europe? Is there a campaign option?

If the nation you can fly in fought in west & east, you usually can choose which theatre you want to fly in. Also, Pacific theatre is included.

And on top of that, you can download DCG (Dynamic Campaign Generator) to get abit more spice to the campaigns.

There are stock DGen dynamic campaigns that mostly concentrate on the Eastern Front and the Pacific, then you have DCG dynamic campaigns which are generally better (We used to fly them online here, no idea why we moved to static campaigns), and you have tons of custom and stock static campaigns on pretty much every front available

Because the DCG campaigns kept messing up on us.

And yes. Il2 1946 Is much better than stock Il2. (and lots of nice mods for it too.)

Thanks for all the informative replies :DL. I've seen screenshots of RAF and USAF fighters and bombers. Where can I download these and are there campaigns such as the USAF's daylight bombing campaign? Can I create my own missions to do this?

Thanks again, sorry to be a burden.

You will find a few missions here >http://mission4today.com/< and if you look in the stickied hanger section theres a few useful links in there.

This ain't like CFS, the planes are in the game already

Hi guys,

I finally got Il2 1946 today and am much more impressed with it. The greater choice of planes is what I wanted.

The only thing that's annoying is that I don't have the basics down.

I don't know how to hold a constant speed or altitude.

Any help please?

Thanks!

Obviously, if you want to keep constant speed, you keep your throttle same. As for altitude, check the controls for elevator trim buttons.

Yes, set keys for the different controls, like pitch.:yep:

Thank you :).

I have just downloaded FlatSpinMan's Spanish Civil War Campaign.

However, I load the first mission and press M for the map, but it has none of the waypoints on. Leaving me guessing where I have to go.

Again, any advice?

Thanks.

It's in the realism options (No Map Path, or something), usually one of the few you want to keep turned off

However, you'll need to restart the campaign to change the realism options, but that shouldn't be a problem if you're only on mission 1

Last question (promise!)
When I fly campaign missions, my Bf109 is in a green camo colour, where as the rest are in a more realistic grey.

Anyone know why?

You can set different skins in the loadout menu for each mission, choose one to your liking or download one off the internets that you like if there is none

Yes. Mission4today has lots of good skins.

http://www.canons-skins.com/ I have also gotten alot of skins from here.

Thanks ever so much guys, I fully retract the comment about IL2 being worse than CFS3. IL2 is shining for me now.

After a few sorties in a Fiat and a few patrols in a BF109 over Switzerland i'm really enjoying this sim :D

Now just to practice the landings without ripping my wheels off...

flaps, divebrakes, sometimes, in a pinch ill kill my engine, or ill weave a little to bleed airspeed

Pfft, landing is overrated

OK, after a long wait I've finally got IL-2 1946 installed and played a bit with it last night. I'm downloading patch 4.08 as I type this but here is one more question:

Is there a flight training or flight school mod for this? Or, do you just jump in and fly around to learn? I'm thinking a "flight school" where you could fly a plane without worrying about much more than learning the plane and practicing.

Also, beyond patch 4.08 (and Dowley--who was great help on the joystick BTW) is there other "must have" type mods or alterations?

Thanks for any tips or tidbits.

Raptor1

Well, there are those tutorial tracks that I never bothered with, and you can launch a mission in QMB with no enemies so you can just fly around with whatever plane you want, so I suggest just playing around until you get used to it

You don't really need anything but 4.08m, but the mods (*dramatic music*) improve the game a lot

That is an almost mandatory requirement in order to fly with the lolwaffles.

Ripping the wheels off is mandatory, mind you, not knowing how not to rip them off
