View Full Version : whopped by a NEUTRAL convoy!

Late 1939 in GW3 Gold (fantastic - thanks to all developers), I've just arrived at my patrol grid and some decent weather (after over a week of bad weather).

I get a radio message warning me thatt a large neutral convoy is in my sector. I identify it and track it's course - to avoid it, I have no intention of attacking. I realise I'm too near and dive to periscope depth to avoid the leading escort. I alter course to N (convoy at WSW). The convoy sails past except for the last escort, who sweeps around towards the north of the convoy and then runs down to re-join.

He gets too close and I deep dive to 100 metres. Obviously he hears me and the nasty so-n-so attacks! One depthcharge attack only and I have major damage! Before I can do anything about it - I'm dead.:wah:

Why be a neutral convoy if you're going to attack anything and everything?

Dashed unsporting, I call it, not playing the game :damn:

A convoy will appear as "neutral" if majority of its units are neutral BUT if there are let's say four british ships in this convoy then the escorts will attack you...Bad luck but now you will know and don't forget... BE MORE AGRESSIVE!

Close but not quite right. A convoy will be reported as neutral if the lead ship (middle ship front row) is a neutral ship. All the rest could be enemy ships but, the convoy will be reported as neutral if the lead ship is neutral. There are convoys where all the ships are neutral but, those are usually not escorted.

I'm inclined to agree with HW3.
On a prior partol I got in front of one of those neutral convoys being reported. lead center merchant was neutral, as were a handfull of others in the convoy. But, - the rest was juicy.

Thanks HW3 i just forgot about the leading ship...Early in the war convoys are sometimes a mix of neutral and enemy ships so you must pay close attention to what you're aiming for!

Personally i attack any neutral warship, or merchant that is traveling under the protection of a country i'm at war with, or if they are suppling said name country. Edited my basic config. renown to reward me for doing so.

@FIREWALL. :yep: Done some research on U-boat.net and found alot of neutrals were sunk during the war. I don't think they all were accidents, although i'm sure that was Germany's official positon.:03:

BTW, If the lead ship in a convoy happens to be a warship, the convoy will be reported as a taskforce.:yep:

Last night I encountered a neutral convoy leaving England, I knew that they're just wanted to fool us, so I chased it. I discovered that only the leading merchant was neutral, all other ship, including the escorts, were the Brit. Apparently, if (and only if ?) the leading merchant (the leading one in the middle column) was neutral, then the game would classified the whole convoy as neutral.

So, be aggressive, and attack the neutral convoys too!

Itīs the war in the atlantic, limited information and inteligence,

you have to verify all convoys and contacts as in real life , but remember, Be agressive and be careful with scorts.

in the real world neutral ships can carry enemy cargo and inteligence agents that could plot your position for hunter killers or destroyers.

At the begining of my current carrear (before britian entered the war in september 1939) I approached a neutral convoy. And 1 of the distroyers was Polish...:shifty: So I dive. and avoid a DC hit for about 30mins (real time).

Convoys appear friendly, neutral, or enemy depending on the lead ship if im correct. Also If a submarine is heading a corvoy. the convoy will show up as a big submarine marker.(If I remember it right.)

From what i've read, GWX inserted the U-boats as part of the task force to simulate wolfpacks.
