... did WW2 US subs had seats for the crew? I ask it because in SH4 you go into the conning tower and the control room and, except for the guys handling the dive planes, everyone is standing.

Crews mess had benches. No seats in the con. No room. There are some benches in the engine room that were also storage. The officers quarters has a bench set up for eating. The planesmen had seats. For the most part, you were on a 4 hour watch and standing depending on your station. Room was a premium.

I imagine the mess area had a few benches Maybe the captain's cabin had a chair. However, most posts required a crew member or officer to move about, sometimes quickly. Even the dive planes guys didn't sit most of the time. Some of the instruments one monitored covered a wide space. You certainly couldn't run a diesel engine from a sitting position.

I forgot about the capt chair in his quarters. The Yoeman had a chair also. Sonar had a seat and radio also. The diesel, once started one could sit on the bench by the throttle and view the gauges. Picture below shows the benches in the engine room. These were movable and acted as storage.

This is true of any ship, not just subs. Crew members who are required to sit (radiomen, radar, gunners) get seats. Anybody else had to stand. The bridge of our destroyer had a swivel seat for the captain. Period.

I guess that's why the Navy stands watches and does not sit watches. :D

It's also true of a lot of some merchant ships. Some captains (And some companies, from what I've been told) forbid watch-standing crew from sitting down, and a few ships don't even have chairs on the bridge.

Some captains claim it's to encourage a better visual lookout, by forcing you to move about more. Other claim that it keeps people from falling asleep. (Ironically, the bridge is usually just above the captain's room, so if you pace back and forth...)

The vast majority of ships have chairs, however, and it's great. :D

Try showing a rotary dial phone to a generation that grew up on cell phones. You'll get a genuinely puzzled look. ;)

What's a cell phone?

I just use a large network of cans and strings.

Even better, show them a manual typewriter. :har:

And then tell them that we actually wrote our thesis on one!

After WW2 the Torsk was converted into the Guppy Class and worked well into the 60's. She is being restored to the 60's configuration thus the rotory phone:up:
