Hi!
I just want to know where others kaleuns are hunting in 1943 as war becomes more and more difficult for us:
-Arctic ocean
-Mediterranean sea
-North Atlantic ocean
-US coast
-Caraibean sea
-South atlantic ocean
-Indian ocean
-The channel :arrgh!:
Me and U-387 are chasing arctic convoys north of Norway. Cold, storms, long winter nights, icebergs, little traffic.. Join the arctic wolves!

I'm having a hard enough time just trying to get close enough to convoy to attack it in 1943. :nope:
Off Newfoundland, at the moment...

I'd try South America. If all else fails you can ground the boat and hide out in Buenos Aires until the war's over.

I voted "North Atlantic", though it isn't so much a hunting ground as it is a "hiding" ground for me at that point of the war.
Man, those Allies are *MEAN*.

I hunt in North Atlantic too.
I just looove the thrill of hunting a Large Convoy escorted by 6-8DDs and a carrier!
This must be the reason that my DID list uses almost 50% of my hard disk's space, even if its a Text file! :har:

I go wherever BdU sends me.
If I was choosing where I would go in 1943, I would name a few places you didn't include in your poll:
Off the coast of North West Africa (DH, DT, DU, EJ, EK),
Central Atlantic (DE, DF, DR, DS),
Off the Amazon (EP),
As well as a couple you did mention:
The Black Pit: (AK, BC, BD, CD), and
off Narvik (AB, AC)
Generally I want places with regular surface traffic, but not much air cover.

Off the coast of soutern Ireland for me....lots of Bogue's around....the only downside is it's a bit on the shallow side to evade depth charges.

Off the coast of North West Africa (DH, DT, DU, EJ, EK) Usually find a lightly escorted convoy somewhere in there (standard escort seems to be 4 or so Black Swans and a couple of Destroyers) Take out the escorts in the first pass through the convoy then fill your boots
Someone voted the Channel, isn't that pretty much suicide by 1943? :hmmm:

That be me. Strictly speaking its not the Channel, but the Celtic Sea (southern Ireland) wasn't an option in the poll. Probably North Atlantic might have been more accurate :hmmm:

I've never played in 1943, but I'm sure my policy will remain the same: I go where they send me, I do my job, I try to bring my boys home alive.

If Iwas playing purely 'for my boat', then I'd probably go somewhere with little air cover but if I'm being loyal to BdU then I must go where I'm told,
however at this stage of the war the question has to be where can I do the most good? That has be the disruption of convoys however well protected they may be. :hmmm:

Sounds pretty Bogueus.

Humm... If i go where BdU wants to send me i would get into trouble. Present patrol, start at Bergen 24dec 1943 patrol order: grid BF14... Crew and boat security first (DID) so instead i go NE and intercept a convoy 700km off Murmansk. No air cover, no escort carrier...héhé!

You don't have a (haven't survived to make it to 1943 option?:hmmm:)
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Seriously, IF i could make it to 1943.. i would probably head to the Pacific. Which by the way you don't have on your lis either. I guess i'm just screwed either way. HEHEHE

The whole bit on going where BdU sends the boat is all loyal and poetic to the game but it's moot for the most part. Since you can control the grid from SH3Commander launch it's back to where YOU want to go again.
Besides in GWX there is no renown for assigned grids so the whole point is irrelavant.
I like to shoot for the air gap, but usually on the way run into some jazz. I also like the chop hunting the Murmansk convoys.

Nobody's criticizing anyone for going where they want. I was just saying what makes me feel good. Yes, low tonnage scores and uneventful patrols make me feel good.

I can see your point and i'm thinking about something...Between the strict (and sometimes stupid) stock patrol order and the 'go wherever you want to go', could it be possible that someone here at subsim give you a grid to patrol according to your flotilla, uboot type and year?
It's just an idea but i think it should be great and not very complicated to make
What do you think about that Steve?

That would be GWX 3.0. They've adjusted the patrol grids to send you to places that reflect true life patrol grids assigned to boats of your type and flotilla.

I just stay in the harbor in 1943 and track sailboats on my hydrophone.:know:

I don't know about relying on another player to give me one. In Aces Of The Deep you could call in and they would give you another grid. My next Type II assignment is for AN81. I looked at the other possible in-game assignments and their locations on an actual grid map. Rather than changing it myself I thought I might go to my assigned grid and if, after a week or two of no luck, might reassign myself to one of the others, or just move one square up the English coast.
I have no problem with looking around for better luck. I just don't want to fall into what I consider the trap of "all the best tankers in May 1942 are in THIS grid." I'm not in it for the tonnage, just the sights and sounds. Maybe it comes from too many years of game playing. And losing.:dead:

I do go to my assigned patrol grid eventually, but if there are area's of strategic importance(choke points, convoy routes, assembly area's)along the way then I will always check them out first, after all, that's my job,to find and sink the enemy, where ever I may find him:03:But I must say sometimes wondering of to the side of convoy route's and the like can sometimes be very rewarding:yeah:
