View Full Version : If we managed to buy a diesel sub, what would we name it?
Onkel Neal
03-22-09, 02:27 PM
Hypothetical question: Say, a couple years ago I shorted a large quantity of a particular stock (even more interestingly, I didn't realize I did it at the time, new stock trader software, not familiar with it, etc ) and now I come into some serious $$...and I decide to act on my childhood fantasy and along with a Belgian venture capitalist, I buy a reasonably sea-worthy Type 209 diesel sub from Venezuela to refurbish as an ocean-going "cruise ship" for submarine enthusiasts.
Anyway, we cannot get it to port in the US but we have a nice little cove in Puerto Caldera... anyway-anyway... if all this actually was going to happen, what would be a good name for the sub?

So many possibilities. However - if that were to actually happen for me - I could only call her one thing.....

As in I am moving in and saying the heck with property taxes and everything else except for a bill for diesel fuel!
If you were doing this as a business (thus the venture capitalist being involved) - I would call her something like the:
SS (For SUB SIM) Experience That way you could offer your customers just a taste of what reality is like for those that serve and protect on such vessels.
I smell something strange here :D
...but back on topic, I'd choose Nautilus for it, I alwasy wanted to have a sub with that name since my boyhood when I first readed 20.000 L. under the Sea:salute:

Well, if oyu bought your own personnal submarine, you need to follow the tradition of James Bond villain and name it after either yourself or your company.
So either SUBSIM 1 (ALL CAPS MAKES IT COOLER) or NEAL STEVENS 1.
But then, if you're going to do that, you might as well go the full length and get yourself a cool villain name, and name the sub according to that. Cause seriously, secret Carribbean Cove and private submarine? Dude's up to no good. The AWESOME kind of no good.
You also need a "My other sub's a Kilo" bumper sticker. And fuzzy dices.

Let me ask you this then; what kind of name would you like? Give me a short description of what you want people to feel when they look at the sub and the name, and I'll do my best to give you a name.

You can alway fall back on the currently in fashion method of naming civillian ship:
(Company name) + (EPIC WORD)
For example:
Subsim Valor
Subsim Courage
Subsim Legend
Subsim Pegasus
Subsim Explorer
Subsim Eternal
Subsim Saga
Subsim Viking
And so on.
I should probably put in a good word for S.S MORE POWERFULL THAN SUPERMAN, BATMAN AND THE INCREDIBLE HULK PUT TOGETHER. It's simply a classic.

You could name your sub after your wife and maybe she will forgive you for the investment. :woot:
If your married that is.. :D
What could you do with a sub..?
I always wondered if I had the cash, I would invite visitors to learn what subs are all about. She would have a minimum experienced crew. These people would have a chance to experience how it was back in the wwII era. Visitors would get basic training and then they would be taken out to the ocean to do what others have done in the past. But this time is for fun and not for real warfare. A few weeks in the ocean to target ships learn about how subs work.. Some dives that can make a man crap themselves hehehe. But nothing too crazy or dangerous.
The main crew would keep thing running. Visitors would do the rest. Each would have to rotate there responsibilities for the few weeks.
Like I said if I had money to support such an operation. :hmmm:
Nice dream... But now back to reality I need to be sinking ship in SH3.:03:

http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2294/victorappletontomswiftb.jpg (http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?image=victorappletontomswiftb.jpg)
I suggest "SS Seeblitz", the name of the sub in that book ! :D
I don't have any ideas as for a name for the sub, nor no idea how much one would cost, but I do have an idea.
If the funds are sufficient enough, or lets just say that money isn't a factor, maybe you could hire a team and raise up an Operation Deadlight boat.
http://www.uboat.net/fates/deadlight_list.htm
Here's a list, quickly looking through it, I think either a type VII-C, such as U-245 would suffice our craving for a sub.
-------
Of course, if you really wanted something historic, remember the three subs that were found off the Turkish coast, U-19, U-20, and U-23? You could have one of these raised, probably for cheaper because in shallower water, and Otto Kretschmer himself commanded U-23. Talk about history!
It's also said that these three boats were scuttled, and, according to an interview found here:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1577456/Adolf-Hitlers-lost-fleet-found-in-Black-Sea.html
these boats might be "a significant find because these U-boats were all scuttled, so they should be intact, like a sealed tube. They are unique survivors of the war.""

Well the only two, out of 61 total, type 209 subs owned (per the OP) by the Venezuelan Navy were the 'Sabalo' Class variants of the type 209. One is the S31 Sabalo http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bqioQ8Ant40/TUU90g1h3gI/AAAAAAAAEpE/B595xA7qIRc/s1600/021209_submarino.jpg and the other the S-32 Caribe. The USS Baleo Class Sabalo, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/95/USS_Sabalo%3B0830204.jpg/300px-USS_Sabalo%3B0830204.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_Sabalo;0830204.jpg) named for a silvery game fish of the herring group, was sunk as a target ship in 1973.:wah: Since we are all 'gaming Herrs' in our own right and the name is good in even the US Navy...simply SUBSIM SABALO :yeah:
