I was just returning from my first patrol. On the chart Kiel is indicated by a dot out in the ocean just north of the inlet which leads to Kiel. I thought that was unusual. So I accessed the Navigator and chose Kiel Canal In but that layed a course over land so I didn't want that. I guess that is only used if you are approaching from the south and west.
So as I approached from the north I steamed south through the inlet and it is a short dash to the dock. I was in site of the dock when a British MTB
boat started firing and sank me. I was totally out of ammo and couldn't fight back. It seemed unusual that he would be so close to the dock. That was a three hours wasted. Does this happen often?

Anyway is there a command when you are near your home port that you can chose to just jump to the port?

The Kiel In route can be selected when your at a little black dot at near the entrance. In order for the route to line up correctly you should be right on the dot and facing the entrance. This screen isn't from GWX so I can't show exact location. I put an x by the spot you need to be.

Getting attacked by the British in your home port in September 1939? I think that is unheard of. Are you sure you didn't sink some neutral ships in your first patrol. Sinking neutral ships, (one of the flotillas gives you practice targets but they are neutral) will make the German ships hostile to you. You may have been sunk by the German ships in Harbor.

Yeah, you will have lost a hell of a lot of renown, because you just started the war a month early. If you attack a neutral ship, all other neutral nations will declare war on you, and attack you. It was probably a German Schnellboot.

You can just press esc and exit patrol within 25 KM of a port to dock in it.

It was August 1939. The war hasn't started yet. All ships are neutral and you sank some. It was probably a German s-boot that attacked you, because you attacked our British friends.

That must have been it. I was too busy inhaling water to confirm the ID of the attacker but I tenatively thought it was a British flag on the MTB but the German flag is similar. I didn't know that I would be be hunted by former friends since the exists to go on the first patrol in August.

Also I was approaching Kiel from the North. That is where the AI starts you if you select starting just outside of your homeport.

I did another start last night and I am going to load SH3 now, hopefully I will be going on my 2nd patrol in about 20 minutes(long load time even on my new gaming pc). BUT... during the first patrol I sunk a sloop and just as it went down I identified it as German. Could be trouble.

That whole 'August' thing came about because BdU sent 14 boats to sea on August 19, and a lot of us complained that we couldn't be part of that group. To avoid it just select September as your starting month. That is what the stock game gives you anyway.

I like taking my time cruising the harbors, so I never choose 'Start at Sea'. In the case of Kiel it would have been nice to start just off the mouth of the Elbe, to represent having transitted the Canal.
