Hi,
I recently re-purchased SH3 on DVD as my original release copy finally became too scratched to use when I needed to install it on a new PC.
I had patched my original copy to 1.4b, so attempted to do the same with my newly purchased copy. I received an error while trying to patch direct to 1.4b. I figured that I needed to download an earlier patch (like 1.1) and work upwards from there.
However, the same error occurred each time.
COuld it be that the newly purchased copy is already pre-patched to 1.4b?
Can anyone tell me how I can establish what the current version is on my install.
Thanks.

Yes, it might be already a 1.4 patched.
Make sure wich copy you are using? The one that comes from US or EUROPE?

To my knowledge it should be a European version as I live in the UK and ordered it from Amazon.co.uk.
What's the difference betweenn the US and European versions anyway?

What is the error message ? I only the other night performed a clean install of SHIII then went to patch it only for it to complain about one of the text files. Removing this file the patch operation ran without hitch and recreated the file I had removed Installed GWIII and the game is running fine

The error I get is:
This program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter III EMEAS DVD v1.0 because of the following reason
E:\SH3\anim.act: unknown version

Just check your currently installed version.
Either load the game and check the bottom right corner of the main menu for the version number or IIRC you can right-click on the SH3.exe and choose properties to see the version number there.

Right-clicking the SH3 App tells me that it's version 1.4.0.1
Does this equate to 1.4b?
If so, then it appears that the DVD copy I purchased three days ago is fully patched!

Fanntastic!
Now, is it worth me getting hold of GWX 3.0? I've never installed any of the GWX mod packages, so I'm wondering if it's really worth it?
If so, is there a link you could kindly point me to that provides a list of what GWX 3.0 adds to SH3.
Thanks again.

No, it's not worth it.
Unless you like having your home base filled with ships coming and going, and fighters overhead protecting your base. Unless you like having the hatch between your control room and the radio room open, so you can see what's going on. Unless you like having the Kiel Canal in place. Unless you like more realistic escort behaviour. Unless you like having realistic convoy behaviour, including the occasional zig or zag right when you're lining up your shot. Unless you like having late-war convoys escorted by blimps.
Unless you want all those things and a whole lot more (that's just what I remember off the top of my head) then, no, GWX isn't for you.
Unless you miss my point, of course you should get it right away. Follow danlisa's advice and link, and the Mother of all Manuals will tell you what you need to know.

I've read about 70 pages out of the 700 or so from the GWX manual. Great stuff. I really should finish the rest of it. Really have to appreciate all the effort that went into it. :salute:
