I finished reading your essay. Good job:up:
I disagree with the conclusion a little bit. Part of your conclusion indicates that states should contribute to the economic development of pirate states like Somalia, even though this has been costly and ultimately ineffective in the past. Even though you are quite correct in pointing out the prominence of economic hardships as a cause of piracy, the solution is not ideal, imo. Personally, I'd prefer to see nations develop regulations permitting the arming of merchant ships and the use of mercenary marines.
Other than that, I really enjoyed and essentially agreed with the whole thing. It looks like you put a lot of work in and I'm sure you will recieve high marks. If you don't mind I'd like to save it as a resource for future citeable reference.

Lance, you are behind in material (bishop (3 points) vs 2 pawns (2x1 points) ).
when you lead in material, you try to trade figures. The closer to endgame you are and the less material there is on the board, the heavier your material advantage scores.
When you are behind in material, you therefore try to evade trades. And you do not offer trades.
General rules, there are exceptions possible, but often they are valid.

We shall defend the king's rank, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the C file, we shall fight on the passed pawns, we shall fight on the diagonals and in the corners, we shall fight in the castle; we shall never resign, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, white's pieces or a large part of them were subjugated and captured, then our pieces in the next game, armed and guarded by the two pawns I am currently behind, would carry on the struggle, until, in Skybird's good time, playing as black, with all its power and lack of first-move advantage, steps forth to the checkmate and the liberation of the old.

Nobody can enforce a win anymore - only with friendly help of his opponent.
You can run this for a very long time to come now, but I'm sure you would be going nowhere, gentlemen. You can't win by any correct moves anymore - but you can lose by any wrong moves. If I were you I would offer or accept a draw now. ;)

Well I gave up the initiative on more than one occasion. Reading now, I guess Nb1-c3 is one of the weaker responses to Alekhine's defence, and more popular is to push the E pawn and attack the knight. I was skeptical of moving a piece twice in my opening.
