View Full Version : SH3 PATCH 1.4b and GWX GOLD Question
Ok guys, I have a UK copy of SH3 showing 2000/XP/Vista OP systems on the box. It is version 1.4. Do I need the 1.4b EU patch for this before I can install GWX? Is GWX the same as GWX Gold? I'm a newbie, so any help about getting started with SH3 would be welcome. BTW, the game is up and running fine on my Vista 32-bit system.

No, your game is already patched; just install GWX;
I would suggest, however, you do the naval academy in unmodified SHIII first, as it is much more difficult in GWX. I would also suggest you run a few missions or a couple of patrols with SHIII to get your feet wet. Also I would make a back up copy of your fresh install of SHIII and store it on a DVD or another area of your hard drive; this will make it easy to reinstall the game if you screw up.
And/or make a backup of your SHIII/GWX 3.0 Gold install.

Thanks for the hearty welcome guys. Haven't played a subsim since my Mac days and Deadly Games U-Boat. Yes, I've already gone thru most of the Naval Academy tutorial, I'm going to start with low realism and auto-torpedo targeting until I'm comfortable with the game. I assume that in addition to improved eye-candy that GWX Gold ups the realism of the game? The advice you gave on first going thru the Academy in vanilla SH3 would indicate this? After installing GWX I assume I will still be able to set realism settings for easy? Sorry for the questions, but I want to make sure I'm not missing any of the details beforehand.

Yes, GWX adjusts the enemy AI to be a bit more realistic. Planes are much deadlier, destroyers aren't so dumb. But don't let that scare you. The war ramps up at a decent enough learning curve. ASW forces in GWX's Sept. 1939 are a nice practice run for what you'll be facing in late '42 onwards.
The advice you gave on first going thru the Academy in vanilla SH3 would indicate this?
Yes. As an example, the stock SH3 flak artillery course just gives you some planes buzzing about and ignoring your u-boat. The GWX flak artillery course is like a "trick question". The planes now have bombs and aren't afraid to use them. It's meant not so much to teach you how to use the flak gun as it is to teach you to dive when you spot an airplane.

Games U-Boat. Yes, I've already gone thru most of the Naval Academy tutorial, I'm going to start with low realism and auto-torpedo targeting until I'm comfortable with the game.
Thats a good way to start - you can always up the realism later on if you desire.
I assume that in addition to improved eye-candy that GWX Gold ups the realism of the game?
Indeed it does both of the above.
After installing GWX I assume I will still be able to set realism settings for easy?
Thats correct - you have the ability to up -or down the realism as you desire at any time.
Eventually, after you are comfortable with GWX3, you might want to try some additional mods, for example SH3 Commander which allows you to fine-tune your gaming style even further. My suggestion is follow your plan, and once comfortable, try some add-ons - the nice thing about these, is that they are easily turned on or off and so you aren't hamstrung by your choices.
Good hunting :arrgh!:
