Right now, I want to rip their heads off! Using proprietary crap drivers, I could scream about now. Why do they do this? Why?

I'm going to work my butt off to get them banned from my company.

It's like Dude... You're getting a Dell.... (Sh*t... That sucks...)

It's nothing against you man. You just wait though. You are about to experience something known in the industry as Dell Hell. There is a reason this nickname is around....

I finally have my GPU drivers working again, but even their installation failed the first time through. I won't get into it, but I lost a ton of time this morning.

I heard the exact same thing about Gateway, that PC has served me well for 6 1/2 years ;) Some people just have more problems with certain brands than others.

It was an ID10T error again. :har: J/K Subman1. :D I heard the same with Emachines. I had two and one is still working to this day like a champ.

Ya it can sure be a pain with certain drivers, namely sound and especially video. Though there are ways around it.

For laptops though that is pretty much par for the course from just about all makers

proprietary definition
Privately owned or controlled. Generally referring to a technology that has been developed by an individual, corporation, or other legal entity that considers the specifications to be a trade secret of value and that retains the exclusive right to exploit it, either for its own use or that of legitimate licensees that pay for the privilege. Proprietary technologies generally are patented, which prevents others from copying or otherwise duplicating them.

Whats the difference between downloading a driver from Dell, or downloading a driver from ASUS? You still have to go to the MB manufacturer to get it.

If you have a NVIDIA or ATI card in your Dell, you can use the drivers from these companies.

:hmmm:

I have no problem with any other company. All I need to say is - proprietary NVidia GPU that will only run Dell drivers and not generic NVidia drivers should be enough for anyone in the industry to know what I'm talking about. Friggen ridiculous.

I had an ATI version back in 2000 - they didn't update the proprietary drivers for 5 years after several attempts to get them to do it, so I swore if I had a choice, I'd never buy another Dell since then.

I see they haven't changed their ways.

Do a search on Dell / ATI in the GT forum - you will find me bitching about it as far as 2005!!! AND THEY ARE STILL PULLING THE SAME SH*T!!!!

:hmmm:BUUUZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!! Wrong Answer! no you friggen CAN'T! Even though it is running a 256MB NVidia, it even says on NVidia's site in this case that my system isn't supported in their releases. Friggen nice!

Can you tell I'm a little ticked?

I understand. But the thing is, any and all computer brands have their issues. HP, Dell, Apple, Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, Lenova, etc. There are always some customers who experience problems and sucky support, and they will be rightfully upset and let the world know. That doesn't mean the brand fails, and with Dell rhyming with Hell, lol, means a lot of people will key into that right away.

Oh oh!! The doorbell just rang, gotta go! :o

Good point Subman but I found the onboard graphics driver you are directed to visit Dell for a driver. I think after market additions of video cards you do not need to go to Dell. Correct? :hmmm:

This is, at least partially, why I learned to build my own computers. I don't have to worry about these things; I can get drivers from the source company and they'll work if they're good.

Instead, I have other things to worry about, like which component is keeping my new computer from booting up. :damn: Or do I really want to wait 3 weeks while my burned out video card goes back to the manufacturer (at my expense) and they send me a rebuilt one.

You are correct. But try upgrading that on a laptop! :DL

I hear ya. But only Dell takes it to these extremes. That is why Dell Hell was coined.

I can't say I hate dell. I'm am pissed off about the screwup they did to me. Aside from that all my dell products always work great. My current XPS 730 is awesome gaming machine. Ok true its no alienware stuff but still damb good. :D

Anyhow they ask for my feedback on a survey to the customer support help and I answered very honestly hehehehe. :03:

I don't think they will like it. :yeah:

Should have been more clear, because mine has a separate video card.

Anyhow this is one of the ways of getting around the whole ATI mobility problem with lack of updated drivers. http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php and make your own hardware specific drivers.

BTW this is an issue with all ATI mobility video drivers, ATI can't release reference drivers for them as many of the oem makers refused to allow them to (not just dell). So its not a problem with dell per say but with every one of them that uses ATI cards.

Ailenware is not even ailenware. Its just a name that has carried on from the good old days.

I actually bought an Ailenware machine when they were run by a few guys in a workshop and was really ailenware. The video card fried within a month, they dident have a direct replacement so they sent me the next model upgrade no charge, then that one fried. They sent me ANOTHER upgraded card.

It was a fine machine and a hell of a performer in its day. Alas now it sits in a closet.

But if you want a 'real' computer get in touch with these guys...

Subman, one favor to ask. Drink a beer and turn on the webcam when you call customer service. I love a good show! :haha: :woot: This will be quality entertainment (for me:D ).
Hell, I think we should make a reality TV show based on subman dealing with dell customer service.:hmmm:

PS. I would like to point out that I have never once had these issues with anything else than Dell, and the occasional Sony. Toshiba, IBM, Lenovo (even though I hate Chinese crap, they make a decent laptop), and even HP do not have these issues. Can't say much for Gateway. I've never purchased Gateway for personal nor for company so I cannot vouch for them.

Not sure what you mean by "old system". The laptop I'm running is pretty much dell state of the art and its running an ATI card (mobility radeon hd 3670 512mb), and ATI doesn't offer reference drivers for mobility cards (Nvidia at least does however). So the link I posted is the way to get around that issue. Otherwise your stuck with waiting for your oem to provide updates (and that goes for all oems using ati cards).

I still think Dell has put together a package that meets the need of a PC in every home. In the cooperate world its still best business practice to use dell and rotate them out every 3 years or as the software demands.

I tried to build comparable systems for the office, but could not compete with the final price with all of the software installed (windows - office - adobe - ect)

We even brought in outside sources and they said the same thing.

I really have never had to deal with graphics drivers or any drivers for that mater on any workstations in general. But I have had to use the driver disk to restore a system or two when HD failure or other problems have occured.

We never buy the low end Dell systems, I made sure of this because they are just too low grade in my opinion. The purchase of the higher end system lends to a longer life span from what I have seen.

Well, this still doesn't apply:

NVidia makes mobility drivers. It just doesn't work on non-nvidia proprietary hardware. The point being, this is not NVidia spec hardware. It is Dell borrowing a GPU from NVidia and making a non-standard (probably lacking in features too) vid proc.

Hmm ya ugg then. I know sometimes it's done simply because they can't make a normal card fit. Or its a cheap system.

Neither. i spent $3K on the AMD system. This one is about $1500.

Dell's mentality is to go to them for anything. If you go directly to someone else, you are outside their sphere of influence.
