hi everybody! not sure if this has already been discussed in the forum- but if it has sorry for the re-post
well im new to this forum and this i going to be my first post....gotta say- this is forum REALLY resourceful..went from 50% realism to 100% in a few days...but my question is this: if i want to play as the german captain in a career- is it best to get sh3? the limitation of only 2 subs in sh4 u-boat is kinda crappy( plus the range of xviii is horrible) also i would like to know the pro's and con's of sh3 over sh4- and is it much different than the u-boat missions? i have played much of the american career and its great- but just doesnt feel the same as commanding a german sub. also a question about sh3- during a campaign, how many subs can be offered to a captain? what im really looking for in sh3 is some variety- compared to sh4 u-boat..
If you are only worried about being limited in submarines and theaters of operations, then the good news is that all the rest of the german WW2 campaign has been modded into SH4 already :yeah: Lurker did a huge job and gave us the ability to play it all, see more info here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134922

WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:
Get both. As Hitman said, a lot of good work has been done for SH4, but there is still a lot of life left in SH3 and a huge amount of great modding has been done, plus you can get it for a very good price these days.
But then I'm biased, because I'm still working on SH3.

The only correct answer: both! :shucks:
You can get SH3 for only $10, and it includes SH2/ Scroll down a bit, the link is right below the Silent Hunter III on DVD item.

No such thing as too many good subsims.

With all the modding done for SH3, it all comes to this:
:arrgh!: in SH3 you'll be fighting the Allies :dead:
 in SH4 you'll be fighting the interface :damn:

I don’t really like SH4; once I sunk the Yamato a few times, it was down-hill from there. Its only U-Boat expansion pack that got me interested with it again. I was playing Sh3 all the time, but I lost my square LCD and got a new Wide screen HD one, and SH3 looks bad on the new screen.

That sounds like an unmodded game, back when Yamato was spawning as a common BB. You might think about giving it another try, the games come a long way since then.
On the otherhand if Uboat's are the preference, Lurkers OM mod is truly an awesome piece of work. The biggest detraction from SH3 is the load times. Especially with the larger mods like GWX, the load times are nothing short of heinous. I tried going back to SH3 some time ago, and i couldn't make myself stick with it. Comparitively, SH3 is showing its age as graphics and performance go. If your patient however, it does remain as a finely honed game after several years worth of modding.
