Details of Loss
U-533 was lost on her first war patrol. She was sunk on 02 OCT 1943, by aircraft somewhere west of Spain. Oblt.zS Mack had earlier reported sinking 3 ships for 25,733 tons from a Gibralter to England convoy, and was returning to Lorient due to damage suffered in an earlier air attack.

Oberleutant z.s. Berthold Mack. A finer officer never existed. May he rest in peace. 1943 was a tough year. IIRC only a 3 patrol average with lots of no ships sunk type of patrols.
