Experienced player of SH I and III here. Haven't played IV much since I got it - went to school, a couple of interrupted patrols.

So tonight I decide to take a Gato out in '43. Off the Marianas, I pick up a single merchant with 3 escorts.

I blow the attack (rusty and haven't used SHIV radar before - never really got set up), get a chance at a re-surface and follow, and an eager beaver tin can skipper comes astern with a bone in her teeth (this is on a moonlit night) and puts me under. I call off the attack (secure from Battle Stations), surface, load fish, and resume course.

But nobody is on the deck watch!

I issue 'Surface' again, change icons around for the crew in the watch section, wait for breakfast, then dawn - nothing! No one is standing watch!

Some hotshot enemy pilot is gonna send me to Davy Jones locker! What is going on here? I'm the captain, I don't stand watch!

Oh, BTW - "Long range contact", but nothing on the scope; I don't know about enemy air 'til he's spotted, it seems.

Oh, here's an answer rom another thread, for the radar: There is no scope for the SD-radar, so when it aquires a contact you only see a notification similar to what you have in the screenshot. If you have both radars and the SJ-scope is clean you know the contact is an aircraft.

Battle Stations

If you keep them at Battle Stations to long they all will fall to sleep no rest is given when you are at Battle Stations so your watch needed rest.:salute:
in the end your boat will come to a stop there will be no crew fit to man it:up:

Also long range air contacts appear on your nav map, not in the scope.

I've had this problem a couple of times too, though on the German side. In my case it was part of the 'running out of oxygen while surfaced' problem, but I've never heared of a US sub having this problem.
Try saving and reloading, for me that helped.

Battle stations could be the problem too, but you say you've secured from battle stations. It is possible your crew is too tired to work, but if you wait for about half a day your crew should be rested.

Anyway, if this problem is somehow caused by your crew it should be noticeable on the crew tab. Anything weird there, like all crew sleeping?

Could the problem be that the game had been paused? No deck watch and CO2 increasing when surfaced happens. Exit/save/reload.

Just a quess. That is what happens to me away.

Read some other threads - seems to be a bug, basically.

I don't use the chart for anything but navigating. I have all that stuff turned off. Geez, even SH I showed you a radar contact for planes - no direcion, but range, and you could tell when it was not approaching.

And yes, as an experienced player of SH, I don't leave people at Battle Stations without good cause.

Here's another bug - reload a previous save of this same patrol ("at dawn", essentially): telegraph goes to All Stop (which is the same as when a patrol starts, anyhow) and then - "Propellor damaged".

Reloaded, same. Reloaded and quickly try to come to 1/3 Ahead - no soap, same casualty.

What the...can we say 'usability testing'? I knew you could.

FYI - vanilla 1.5 at 79% realism (not manually targeting yet, still haven't played SHIV that much). Played SHIII a LOT - auf Deutsch! What a hoot! With Real U-Boat mod - awesome.

Also long range air contacts appear on your nav map, not in the scope.

Some times you will get this call at some rate of TC. The TC snaps to 8 as the call is made, check the map and nothing is there. Its okay just wait a few minutes untill another 'sweep' and it will appear.

What happened is that due to the TC the first call contact faded from the map

Its best to play this game at a lower level for a few to see how it ticks, then bump up.
