Hi everybody! I play sh3 with gwx 3.0 in march 1943 with a type VII-C and a strange and cool thing happened.
I have attacked a convoy west of iceland (2 ships sunk) and escaped escorts for 1 hour. Before surfacing my boat i always do a 360° look with the periscop and to my surprise i find a straggler from the convoy. It's not unusual as there is a storm outside. I decide to stay submerged and i soon discover that he's slower than me so i can manoeuver to attack him with my rear tube. I have a T-III in my tube 5, solution is ok ,LOS!

And after only 11 seconds i got the 'she's going down' and hourrah from the crew WITHOUT any explosion or 'torpedo impact'. I look into my periscop and.. the boat is cut in two and quickly sink! The boat is counted in my logbook. I was too close from my target ( a T-III sets at 30kn runs at 15m/s, so in 11sec it runs 165m which is not enough to activate the torpedo) but my DUD torpedoe did the job :arrgh!: !

Anybody else ever experienced something similar???

(In 1943 with DiD 100% no map contact i can assure you that each boat sent to the bottom is a big victory)

You were lucky to get that one!

I've sunk a schooner by ramming in heavy seas, but that's the best I can do!

I suspect it was the rough sea, and not a dud torpedo.

I have no idea how this happened. If that was a rough sea responsible for sinking aircraft carrier so it would be another unexplained phenomena. Ships such size usualy don't sink just because waves are high :-?

Speakin on luckiest hits, I managed to sink coastal frighter with only two shots from the deck gun on my last patrol. Fastest kill with deck gun so far

It wasn't an aircraft carrier but a tramp steamer (the carrier is my sig... :D )
I guess that rough seas made 99% of the job but when i attack the boat it was still afloat and doing 4 knots. I get the renown for the sinking and i didn't hit it with anything but my torpedo. Secret weapon??

:rotfl: bloody sig.. ok than the boat sank because of the rough sea :D That aircraft carrier confused me :) Thought it was a screenshot for the topic :O:

I'm still waiting for a Balz type maneuver where the torpedo riccoches off one boat, goes sailing through the air and comes down on the deck of another ship like a bomb !
I havn't been able to pull that one off yet. :DL

Hmm, maybe the torp WAS dud but, luckily it went off just next the steamer.
This way you get no reports about the torpedo.

Anyway, my fastest kill was oneshotting a DD (Flower Class if i remember right)
using one (1) deck gun shell. The lucky strike probably hit its ammunitions so a chain reaction blew the ship sky high! :D

I remember this one time that I got REALLY angry that this Flower class ship wouldn't leave me alone and I was running out of air and electricity. I surfaced and went full steam and attempted to have it out with the deck gun. As you can imagine, that didn't last long with shells coming down on my U-Boat like hailstones in a storm. The topside crew were killed but had got in a couple of shots on the ship which was now on fire, smoking, and mad as hell.
Another shell took out my diesels and then she turned toward me and rammed me full steam pretty much destroying everything else. To add insult to injury, the ship fired every deck gun it had at me while still pushing my now bent U-boat out of the way. The resulting explosion killed most of my crew, but to my astonishment, also blew up the ship !!! She went down in secconds. I was AMAZED how fast she zipped into the depths.
What little remaining of my crew were stunned and miraculously were able to resurect one of the diesels (It was only capable of a couple knots).

I wish I had pictures of the sub after that encounter. With the Torpedo Damage Final mod in there, my U-boat looked like a bent in half, crumpled, piece of tin foil ! It literally was NOT recognizable as a Uboat. I was actually able to limp that thing back into Loriet !
According to my SHIII Commander personal file, the Uboat came back with 98% of it's hull damaged. If my crew had so much as breathed on a wall plate, that thing would have fallen into a million pieces ! Thank the maker for Duct Tape !!:salute:

Once I was on the surface about 2500 m from a tramp steamer and hit it with my first round of a 105 mm gun and the ship exploded and sank within 2 minutes.

I remember reading about u-505 being the most damaged u-boat ever to have returned to port under it's own power... Not any more :salute:

Yeah. It happened off the west coast of Africa. I had to stay on the surface for the whole trip back because the batteries were destroyed. I'm assuming it was more pure luck that we didn't run into any aircraft on the way.

OMG... I've just read U-505's fate on www.uboat.net/boats/u505.htm (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u505.htm) it's amazing...
