Well, having the meet set up in my own country, it would be a shame to miss, so I have marked the dates in my calendar. For those of you who missed my photos from my visit to UC3 Nautilus last summer, here's a link for them:

And Neal, since you're buying the first beer, I trust you'll do the ordering in Danish too...? :03:

I was thinking, being a Dane, the hotel lodging is not enforced or anything?
I mean, before any visits starts, I could probably just meet up with the rest of you in the lobby and otherwise live with family in Copenhagen...
FYI:
http://www.ordbogen.com/
An online dictionary. It does cost money to use, but one can look up two words for free per day. In case any of you find Danish pages.
Dansk = Danish
Engelsk = English
Tysk = German
Fransk = French
Spansk = Spanish
Svensk = Swedish

Being British, you're part of the European Union as Denmark is, so no, you don't need a visa. The meet is only a couple of days...
Hold it, I said BEER! I didn't say anything about bears! :O:
Speaking of bear/beer, then here's a Danish expression:
have en ordentlig bjørn på (directly translated: to have one real bear on) = be gloriously drunk

Yep, that's A-ok, we just want all the guests who are lodging in Copenhagen from abroad to be in one, central place.

Isn't there another type VII in Chicago? The U-995 is the last VIIC/41 as far as I remember.
Well anyways, if I should be able to make it, I'm gonna swing by Laboe for the memorial/U-995 and Bremerhaven, for U-2540. Either on my way up or back.

Although Wolfgang Peterson kept referring to the U-505 as a Type VII all throught the Das Boot director's commentary, I'm pretty sure it is a Type IX.
Are you German, Thomen? Would it make more sense for me to fly in to Hamburg, take a car to Kiel, then on to Copenhagen?

Yep, I am. Although I have not been in Kiel or north Germany for around 18 years. You will have to drive the distance anyways, so it does not really matter. Problem can be for the flight back, tho. You will have to get back to Hamburg. Personally, I would probably stick with Copenhagen.
EDIT:
Indeed, 505 was type IX
http://www.uboat.net/boats/u505.htm
Havent watch the commentary yet, so can't comment on what he says.
EDIT 2:
If possible, see if you can get a ticket for either to Hamburg and back through Copenhagen, or into Hamburg and Copenhagen for the flight back. That ought to be the best solution, but the Airlines really do not like stuff like that.

Yeah, I really don't hold out much hope for a DC to Hamburg/Copenhagen to DC lineup, but that would be so cool!. I think you are right, just a flight into Cop. then arrange a car to zip over to Kiel, see Das Boot, then return to Cop.
I've been waiting to see U-995 since I was 9...about 40 years! :woot:

Better for me from Houston? Or better for you from...where are you again??
Or do you mean a boat from Cop. to Kiel and back?
Please be more clear, you know, I never passed Mindreading 101. :arrgh!:

Fastest from Copenhagen to Kiel seems to be the ferrie from Puttgarden, Germany to Roedby, Denmark.

Neal (and others considering visiting Laboe),
you might want to consider flying to Hamburg, going with the train to Kiel (ca. 1,5 hours) and again with the train to Kopenhagen (around 5 1/2 hours). Trains from Hamburg to Kiel are going around every hour, from Kiel to Kopenhagen I think there are around 5 connections a day. Just a hint. Here is a trip planner from the Deutsche Bahn:
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml
Anyway, I still don`t know if I`ll make it to the subsim meeting, but if some are planning to meet in Laboe I might meet you there, since it`s only 30 km from here.

One more thing: Neal, you could set-up a separated thread for those guys who will go to U-995. I think it would be good to coordinate it in a manner we could make the visit together, then go to Copenhagen. :shucks:
Your right Neal...its not the long way around.
I would love to join you in Kiel, but considering im the host, I think I will be very busy the day before the meet.
The cheapest ( if you dont already have a car) would probably be to use the trains to Copenhagen.
The cheapest flights accros the atlantic will probably hold a stop in Frankfurt, Holland or UK depending on what airline you use.
Heres some pointers:
KLM (Holland) www.klm.com
Lufthansa (German) www.lufthansa.com
SAS (Scandinavian) www.sas.dk This airline will have direct flights to Copenhagen from some US Airports including Dulles and New York.
Furthermore SAS, Lufthansa and United are in a group called Star Alliance (http://www.staralliance.com/baseAction.do?language=) where you can earn a great deal of flyer miles.

Lurchi, I hope you will attend, we need to have as many people as possible, and since this is right next to Germany, come on:shucks:
I really like the idea of flying in to Hamburg on the morning of Sept 16 and sharing a ride with a German to Laboe, then on to Copenhagen. This is similar to what we did in the Amsterdam meeting; me and two other Americans flew into London, Nemesis (a Brit) picked us up, and we traveled across the channel, through nrothern France and spent the first night in Ghent. Then we went on to Amsterdam. I really love to get away from the city and airport and see the country. I have seen very little of Germany, it would be wonderful to go some distance on the ground :up: We will see which Americans and Canadians are coming, how many want to share this idea, and who/how many Germans are interested too. And not only Germans, but French, Italians, and Dutch may drive through Hamburg to Laboe/Copenhagen. Cool.

There have already been two there: a big one in London and a local one in Amsterdam.

I'm trying to decide if I should bring my wife? Part of me says it would be fun, but the last time I went to a naval museum with the spouse, after 10 minutes: "I'm bored, lets go!" I would hate to ruin my fun with a bored spouse. what do you guys think?

you got 3-4 wives going... send them shooping for danish pastries and capuccinos.
no credit cards
must win the lotto (and then I would add my wife to the pastries tour)
killing to find a way to attend, two of my subsimming friends live in the UK and Denmark:woot:

The above mentioned place was meant as a joke, obviously... ;)
Here is a list of night clubs and a map of their locations:
http://www.nelso.dk/dk/koebenhavn/nat-klub-diskotek/
Some of the hot places with lots of pretty girls are:
http://www.luuxcph.dk/
http://www.k-3.dk/
http://www.vega.dk/?sc_lang=en
But one should also notice that some evenings, those places demand membership, and/or you'll be asked for ID for age verification, since some evenings the limit will be either 18, 21 or 24 years of age. Some of these places will also have dress code on occation, so no naval outfits like uniforms and hats.
The membership thing is a little out of the question for most of you, so maybe McBecks suggestion to go to either a pub or bar will be the best option. Or maybe do the pub crawl thing. Something we often do: go in and get a beer (notice I wrote beer and not bear :D ), then go to next place and get a new beer and so on...

I'll try my best to get there, but not sure yet.
Me and the significant other are considering it, but finances are tight so it's fifty/fifty. If we do do it, we'd, or rather I'd, like to see Kiel and Laboe too, so I might have to do it that we get to Kiel and meet the excursion there and hop on for the ride back then fly out from Copenhagen.
We'll see :DL

You just drive to Groningen, (unless you live closer to Germany than that) follow the signs that say Bremen, then make a left, follow the signs that say Odense then follow the signs that say Kobenhavn or some such..., and that's without consulting any more than a kriegsmarine Grid map, how hard can it be... :yeah:

Nah, you're cool, this is just the announcement. Go ahead and get your vacation scheduled with your job, check airfares, and stand by. In a couple months we will send out the official sign up sheet , set the activities and meeting times, and block out a suite of hotel rooms. Ok, I booked my flight today, and so has Chad and Abe.
Our connecting flight is in Washington DC, United 9404 or SAS 926 (it goes under either name) departing DC on Mon Sept 14 at 5:15pm.
If anyone wants to join us on the plane, go for it. Let me know if you need any other flight details.
DEPART
Houston (IAH) to Washington (IAD) 09/14/09 11:55 am - 3:58 pm UNITED 550
Washington (IAD) to Copenhagen (CPH) 09/14/09 5:15 pm - 7:15 am SAS 926
RETURN
Copenhagen (CPH) to Washington (IAD) 09/20/09 12:20 pm - 3:00 pm SAS 925
Washington (IAD) to Houston (IAH) 09/20/095:25 pm - 7:39 pm UNITED 493
Any news ? It's almost time to book the flight. Maybe Neal could run some 'last resort' banner campaign and set some close date, at least for the 'main force'. We could then distribute bunks and start booking.
I mean I want to book the flight .. but I want to book the room first .. and I don't know anybody to share the room with. I hoped I'll get the room mates assigned.

Post a request to split a room in the meeting forum.
I have such request pending there for month.
If you don't have any spare subscriptions, I will book single room. :88)
Edit: checked the prices again .. now that sucks. For one night that would be expensive, but ok. But multiply it by 5 .. and the conclusion is, if I don't find room mate (or better two), I won't go. I just don't want to pay 90% of the total trip price on the hotel.
I looked for some other hotels, but the prices are not much different for single room.
So please, if you have any info about people who want to go, please pass it to me, since the forum seems poorly visited.
