There was a thread on this subject a few days back...

It can be done but takes a bit of luck...or modding.

It is possible as long as you keep your speed down as you approach to stop your bow wave being spotted. There are other factors that need to be taken into consideration such as the number of escorts present, is the moon up etc. See this thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=139413 for a screenie I posted sometime ago which shows how close you can get. That was with GWX 2.1 and the 8km atmosphere. Since GWX 3.0 and using the 16km atmosphere I have found night attacks a bit more challenging, having said that, it was later in the war during 1941 which might account for that.

I found it under the main install folder Ubisoft/SH3/Data/Cfg/SIM.cfg
Try that instead of the My Documents location. Also if you used the default install location it probably looks like Program Files/Ubisoft/SH3/Data/Cfg/SIM.cfg
You can open these files in notepad. Before you edit its always a good idea to back up the original somewhere else in case you need to restore.

After you've fired your torperdoes, don't wait around on the surface to watch the fireworks, as soon as they have left the tubes, submerge, and the search lights won't see you!
but if i dont wait... how i know that i sunk the ship?.... two days ago i was in gibraltar... i fired three torpedoes and only one hit at medium cargo... i cant wait to see the final... and that merchant dont be in my DiD

If you are submerged, you can be quite a distance away and you'll still know because it's within the sensor range for your hydrophones.
I think that's true out to the range of the hydrophones, which I can't remember now but it's more than 30 kilometers, and that's several hours of traveling submerged at "kleine fahrt voraus".

Yea that's the real way to find out. The cheaters method is to save and exit a short while later and see if your tonnage total increased for the patrol.:smug:
