Yeah,
There's a problem with Silent Hunter IV. The problem is that there is a misspelling on the map that needs to be corrected. Port Swettenham is misspelled as "Port Sweetenham" on the map. In real life, it was spelled Port Swettenham, which is present day Port Klang Malaysia. It was named after Sir Frank Swettenham, a British explorer in 1901.
Has anyone overlooked this? Does anyone know about this? How come Bounganville is spelled "Bourganville on the map, also?

Yeah...the New Guineea isn't even something you can blame as a non-english spelling like Jawa instead of Java.
The name of Korea not listed doesn't bother me too much. Outside of Australia I don't think any country's names are marked on the map.

Australia is a special case-the name of the continent just happens to also be the name of the country.

the thread has an explanation on how to add or change any name on the map but its not very clear, you will just have to figure it out unless someone can explain it in plain language.
i dont think the guy who created it spoke good english, but he isnt around anymore but the mod with the same instructions as his post has is.
here is a good download link for it: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=780
the file where the names are is the Campiagn_NMS found in data/ campaigns/ campaign then find the Campiagn_NMS file and its a text file so you open it with windows notepad
inside it looks like this:

this is a huge list so take your time and you can find and fix them all. (there are 113 map locationsin the stock file and in his modded file there are 163)
as for adding new ones, im sure its probably easy but as i said before you will have to figure that out for yourself or maybe someone can explain it to both of us.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not going to change the misspelling. all that will do is either cause an error or make the name disappear from the map. That points to a .dds file which has an Alpha channel (Selection) which is what shows on the map. The .dds file is where you need to make the correction, then if you save the .dds with the proper spelling you will change the entry above. If you save the .dds with the same incorrect spelling then you will not need to change the name above. Basically the name shown in "FileName2D=I_NewGuineea.dds" is simply a filename, the name of the Image file that contains the name shown on the map. Here is I_NewGuineea.dds with the name as a 'selection'
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7807/newguineea.jpg
The background is the same color as the text to avoid any Anitaliasing problems and give a crisp edge to the text. If I change the background color, you can clearly see the name that shows on the map.
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/4234/newguineea2.jpg
The listing in campaign_NMS.mis of "FileName2D=" simply gives a filename which in this case is in the Data/Terrain/LocationMaps.
So to correct the name on the map, load the .dds into a graphics program and redo the name and alpha channel (selection) and save it. If you save with the same filename (incorrect spelling) then you do not need to change the Campaign_NMS.mis file. If you change the filename then you need to change the Campaign_NMS.mis file also.

It was not just the misspelling that bothered me. It was the shortage of identified locations. The response to my question on names posted in the Yahoo 'Silent Hunter' group forum was the link http://files.filefront.com/Map+Labels+13zip/;10061427;/fileinfo.html which was a zip file with the files needed to update the map. It still lacks some names I wish were there so I can tell where I am easier but it is an improvement.
I updated my Paint Shop Pro 7 imaging program to work with DDS format but have only looked at it once. Does not look so easy since I know little about image editing.
Anyway, I used the above named link and it makes the map better.

In my post above I was referring to the name such as Islands, Seas,Ocean, etc. And the names come from .dds files.
But the OP asked about Port Swettenham and that is a Harbor and those names are in the Campaign_LOC.mis because they are added in the mission editor when you place the harbor. So to fix that IS a simple text edit. You can open the Campaign_LOC.mis in notepad and fix this line:
[MapLocation 651]
Type=0
Priority=1
Title=Port Sweetenham
Heading=0.000000
OnLand=false
ShowOnMap=true
FirstRenderStep=false
FileName2D=Small_Pacific_Harbor_II.dds
FileName3D=Small_Pacific_Harbor_II.dat
LocationName=Port Swettenham <-----Fix the spelling in this line to have it show on the map.

Doesn't show in the game. A reference to the location but as far as I know it shouldn't matter what it's called. The one I pointed out is the one the mission editor calls "Location Name in game". The other is "Name(in editor)". The one I pointed is what actually shows on the map. I have not tested it, but I don't think there would be a problem changing both, but I don't think it is necessary. Changing it in a career that has already started might be a problem, but that is untested. (at least by me)

Sometime ago Jace11 made a map labels mod for SHIV, I have a link to it, I`m using it in 1.5 o.k. There may still be a few missing names, and some errors, but better than stock by a mile.

thats what we are talking about Ivan, after using the map labels (or even if you dont) you still have the original spelling errors because jace addded more names and wasnt correcting those already there.
