Twice I've actually ran into battles. This is my first career with RSRD. Great work.
The first one was the TF coming to Guam. I play about 100%, no contacts and just use cams for SS's, so not easy and still having problems with tracking. This one I got it right..sank two carriers. I then started tracking the force. I heard..maybe rumor you can see actual battles take place. I couldn't end around, I just stayed back in radar range about 20,000 yards back. Finally planes picked me up. I swear they had a train of planes back and forth from the carrier group. I got attack by about 30 planes at once..one after the other..deep, so no problem. Scared I would lose the TF, I came up and shot it out with some planes, guys shot down six..God bless us we lost Brad Richardson our best gunner, but he got 5. Still had TF in radar contact at 20,000 yards, had to dive. I came up five minutes later..should have still had radar contact, but they were all gone.. Flank speed on the track, never found them, but lots of planes.
Later I found the Leyte TF coming through the San Bern Straits..think that's right, both Y's and about 24 ships which seems to be the max. I got 4 hits on one Y. He fell back a little, but I had 12 dd's keeping me down. Finally left, got to the surface and picked the force on radar. I cammed all the way forward to see if a battle would take place and just watched the force for a long time. However, they finally just vanished.
So I assume you never really see actual battles take place between surface forces.
They should come back though the strait, but waited next day...nothing. A few ships ran into shore and blew up. I wanted to catch the trailing Y.
My guess is once they make the actual passage, the game programs them off and they don't come back. I spent 30 hours tracking the guam TF over 4 days. Had to play it in real time because of all the contacts. Not going through that again. So, my guess is the TF is gone to spawn another day and no need waiting around.
