View Full Version : Firing torpedos?

First off, very new to this game so I'm having problems firing torpedos. I'm no good at it to begin with so I'd like to do it simply. I have a few problems so I'll outline them:

1) I can't tell where ships are when the sonar announces their bearing. Does that mean if they're at bearing 241, I can point my periscope at the 241 notch and that's exactly where the ship is?

2) I generally can't tell where anything is underwater so I started surfacing the ship so they appear on the map, but then I found out you could just raise the periscope and it'd do that to, but either way it gives away your position. How do you find out where a ship is so you can shoot it down without using a periscope or surfacing? I figure it has something to do with bearing.

3) I also tried using the TDC to fire off torpedos, but the torpedos always miss and I can only fire the torpedos in a left direction, so I usually end up spinning around in the water aimlessly until the ship just happens to cros over the torpedo line and I fire off shots. Is there any easier way to fire torpedos in the right direction?

Yes, however you can hear ships long before you can see them.

Shooting a ship without ever using the periscope is very hard. There are some tutorials that teach this technique but I have never been able to do it. The trick is to keep your scope up only for a few moments. Up and down up and down is the way to do it.

hmm this is a toughy, I am not sure I understand what you are doing. Could you please post all the steps you are taking when you shoot. We can then, hopefully find what the problem is

What I mean is that the angle the TDC says the torpedo will go in slants out from the in a rounded L shape to the left of the ship, and moving the spread angle justs moves the end of the line, like I can only fire torpedos to the left of the sub instead of 180 degrees to the front of the boat. At any rate, when my sonarman hears something, I generally surface the whole boat so I can see whats going on and head straight for it, then dive and drive around until I can get that line over the ship and fire off some torpedos and hope they hit.

Hmm Always shooting to the left sounds like the dreaded AoB problem.:know:

Are you sure you have the AoB selected correctly. This is a common confusion.

Angle on the bow is the bearing FROM the target ship ship TO your submarine.

Imagine yourself on the bridge of your soon to be doomed target. Where is your submarine? That is AoB. 38 degrees to Starboard for example.

From your target to you. Never from you to the target

In any given situation your submarine will be either to the port or starboard of your target.

So, if you, on your submarine, look to port and see the starboard side of your doomed target what is the angle of the bow? It will be xxx degrees Starboard... even though you are looking to port, the angle on the bow is from the target.

The soon to be doomed captain is frantically looking to his Starboard to see your death dealing submarine.

When setting up the shot in the TDC make sure that not only do you have the bearing from your target to your sub right, for example 038 degrees relative, make sure you have the TDC set to the proper "side" Port or Starboard.

If I had a dollar for every time I had the AoB set at the wrong side (Port when it should have been Starboard) I would not have to be in the navy sinkin ships :arrgh!:

Try that, if that aint the problem, come back and I will make up another solution for you. :haha:

When you lock on to your target and go to the attack map you have what looks to be a single target line from the boat to near the ship. How near the ship depends on the torpedo speed and the target's speed. This line indicates where the torpedo will intersect the center of ship when fired at 0 degrees if you remember to open the outer doors (Q key). Where the ship is now does not matter, it is where it will be when the torpedo gets there that matters.

When you change the angle another line appears and moves right or left depending on which way you rotate the dial. This indicates the point the torpedo will spread from the ship's center when it impacts. If you are 1000 yds from a large Freighter moving left to right and fire a torpedoes at 4 degrees right and one degree left you will hit under the front kingpost and behind the funnel in the engine room. no matter what mods you are using the ship will eventually sink.
