Hi guys,
I've finally taken the plunge and purchased SHIII from play.com. It should be with me on Friday.
I'm completely new to SH but I have an avid interest in Subs, particularly U-Boats.
Can anyone give me a list of links for some must have mods and add ons that will be great for me to get started on?
I realise this must be asked several times per month, but I am absolutely new, and a bit lost.
I've been looking in the screenshots thread and some of those cargo ships look really good.
What do you guys recommend I get?
Thanks!!

welcome
for starters... SH Commander... then a supermod (such as NYGM or GWX)... and personally, if you are willing to use "realistic aiming" OLC's GUI. ;)

Thanks for the prompt reply guys, really appreciate it.
I take your advice about just using the stock game to get to grips. I certainly will do just that especially with the training sessions.
I was hoping to compile a list of great mods for the game, ready for wehn I go into real warfare, I want all the "bells and whistles" so to speak. I've seen some mighty fine repaints and life boats etc.
The area i'm really interested in is English shipping, so if anyone knows of good mods to grab now ready for use when I need them then that would be appreciated!

there's a mod on the works that will add many ships, its "Iambecomelife's Merchan Fleet mod"
and for eye candy... maybe the "life boats" mod (it's the one that adds the life boats )

hmmm there a few "essentials" you should definately get....
torpedo damage 2.0 mod (much better damage decals on ships)
lifeboats mod (extra immerision and realism)
racerboys sh4 effects for sh3 (vastly improved smoke and explosions)
water streams mod (surfacing u boats look AMAZING with this)
and of course as others have stated a super mod (gwx 3 and nygm) i personally prefer gwx 3 and sh3 commander is essential as well
good hunting!:arrgh!:

Hitman's Optics Mod. This was already in the NYGM mod but now has a version for GWX 3.0. Its a must have as it is true to how range was actually determined.
If your new to subsims. Reading Wazoo's manual will save you a lot of frustration on manual targeting and intercepting. The game does not have a good tutorial on either of these.
I agree with what was said earlier about starting with stock. While your learning I'd leave the dud torpedoes off and use the external camera from the view of the target ship to see where the torps are missing. Its kinda fun watching the bubble trails.:yep:
I'd also recommend this thread for a crash course in interception and targeting. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=88961
After reading that thread my tonnage totals tripled.
Oh and on your keyboard the Q key will open your torpedo doors. You have to select the tube and press Q for each tube individually. If you don't open the doors first there will be a 2 second delay in firing. I bet I played a week before I knew this.

What an amazing response, thank you guys so much!!
I can't wait to get the sim. I've been watching U-571 (Ok, so perhaps not the MOST realistic film ever made) and Das Boot to get me in the mood.
Once again thank you so much for your input, if you have any other suggestions please do post!!

When you get your game why not put the new GWX3 on right away and play it at a low realism level. Its so much better in both looks and gameplay then the standard game.

I agree GWX3 is tons better than stock. But playing some in stock first will give you an even greater appreciation of the mod. Its a good way to differentiate between 'practice missions' and the 'real war'. GWX can be less forgiving and it might be frustrating if you started cold turkey on it. Its not always fun to spend 2 and 1/2 hours dodging depth charges in real time.
I'm still fairly new to the subsim genre and I know it can be a bit overwhelming at first. The stock game will show ships on the nav map as friendly, neutral or enemy. While in GWX you just get a ship on the nav map and you have to determine its nationality. The nationality of the flags at night sometimes can only be indentified from 500 meters or less. Starting out you will have your hands full just intercepting ships.
Sinking a neutral will give you negative renown.
Heres one of my favorite Quotes but I can't remember where it came from- "There are bold captains and old captains but there are no old bold captains":arrgh!:

Welcome aboard.:)
You may want to look at the "Tips & Tricks" thread located near the top of the top of the page in this section. It contains a lot of information not covered in the stock game manual (ie. to look at your incoming radio messages press the "M" key).
If you're using Vista be sure to browse the "SH3 & Vista" thread too. While your game will probably be already patched to 1.4 there is information in that thread that will help you install SH3 correctly & get you going.
Hope this helps & have fun...:)

Welcome aboard! :D
You'll find this forum to be the most friendly and helpful on the internetz.
I would bet that you won't be playing stock for long. Once you get your feet wet, try to load one of the super mods.(I'm using GWX. Haven't tried NYGM...yet). You'll find a huge difference and improvement over stock. I always felt that I wasted about a month of playing time playing stock once I downloaded GWX. It was night and day when comparing the two.
Once you pick a super mod, you'll soon start adding some of the various and awesome mods available.
Enjoy, and once again, welcome!

Thanks very much!
So far I am downloading GWX 3.0, SH Commander, Lifeboats mod, Torpedo damage mod and the water stream mod.
Will these mods work in the dynamic campaign? I really want to go for realism and go hunting for merchant ships you see.
I'd also like a really great "worn" U-Boat skin that looks like the boat has seen some service.
Can someone direct me to this, and will it all be available in dynamic campaign?
Cheers!

Captain Birdseye, for skins & mods you can't find a better place than bts-mods.com
Everything you're looking for is right at your fingertips - we've got about 30 SH3 modders who host their work on our site. Look through the names, click on their downloads link and browse away!
Venatore has some nice skins in there, as does Koondawg, Yamato9, Wolfehunter, CapZap and a bunch of others - heck I've even got a few myself. Check it out ;) My sig has the link.

Vielen Dank, Korvettenkapitän!
Thanks again you guys, I will be definatley only using the stock game until I am confident with the workings of the sub (I'm clueless as how to operate them yet!)
SW Cowboy, your repaints are amazing! I especially like the rustbucket versions, I could quite imagine enjoying sailing a less "cared for" sub such as these.
Did U-Boats often go on patrols in such conditions?

They generally got a make over between patrols, but as the war turned against the Germans and bombings turned into almost daily events the maintenance was prioritised to machinery and weapons/armaments in the main.

Thank you!
I think i'll download one of the "fresher" models for my little ventures as a amateur sea wolf (or should I be dog? puppy? :haha:) then a rustier model as the war progresses.
Thanks again everyone, my mouth is now drooling waiting for this game! it looks so good!
I shall let you know how I get on!

Welcome aboard fellow kaluen, i myself am new to this forum, although i've been playing this game long befor there were any mods at all. :salute:
I agree that you should start slow, you can get overwhelmed pretty quickly in this game with all the mods, especially if you dont know how to use JSGME mod installer. Take your time, find out what you like and don't like with the stock game, and then add your mods from there.
I currently use SH31.4
GWX3.0 gold
SH3 Commander3.2
SH3gen.
Some of SaltWaterCowboy's skin mods
Tuddley's Radio Broadcats mods
Lifeboatsdebrisv4
CapZapemblemspack
CombatRadioFrequencey
NewAISchnellboot
GWX3deckgunrange
RBflags
RBexhausttypeVIIBGWX
All of VonDosShips mods, these are excellent
Hitman's opticsGWX3
Hitman'sU-505Compass
EliteU-boat uniform black
U-boat commanders uniform
Some of Koons skins
Fubar's U-253skin
Graf's VIIC skin
GWX3 Churruca destroyerv1.2 Great mod
GWX3 St. Nazaire & Schulessev4 Must have mod
Thank all of you listed above for your dedication and hard work for making these possible.
I hope this helps.

If I can make a suggesion, it's to agree with those who recommend starting with the stock game. Add mods later on as you see what it is you'd like to change. There's so much out there - and not everything is compatible, that you'll have to pick your favorites. Also, depending on your computer, you'll probably have to eventually choose between modifications and performance somewhere. Most of all enjoy! You'll find you can customize your game in a lot of great ways thanks to the many talented people on this forum.
