I'm off the coast of Long Island in January '42 being chased around by an armed tug who can somehow hear me while I'm submerged at night.

Am I wrong in thinking that the American submarine defense, especially at this stage of the war, was pretty ad hoc and that tugboats wouldn't be outfitted with hydrophones? From what I've read, the Navy gave civillian volunteers a couple of depth charges and said throw them at anything you think could be a U-boat. But I don't recall ever hearing anything about installing hydrophone sets. Much less teaching these guys how to use them.

If it's an armed tug then it might have been prepared in advance for ASW operations. Having a gun doesn't mean it's definitely equiped to fight submarines that early, but it does mean it was made to fight, and what else would there be that it could fight?

No idea, really; just tossing out ideas.

No hydrophones. They got probably got yellow barrels in you and they think you're a Great White. Are you off Long Island after all.

Farewell and adieu to you fine Spanish ladies....:salute:
