Fall `44
about 1500 hrs.
CG95 a few hours left of Gibraltar, not out of the channel yet.
VIIC/41 had an interesting carrer so far in the Med., but now there's no where else to go but out. Trying to complete a 2.1 carrer before I reinstall everything, again.
Anyhow; had to tag one destroyer closer to the choke point as he got a bit close. Then I'm closer to the southern side and run smack into a convoy headed East. I managed to snuff an escort and a whale factory before buggin out to 245 meters and somehow fooled them with a decoy and manuvering - going to super silent mode at the right time.
An hour passes contacts indicate they have given up. I go back up to snorkel depth and get refreshed.
The boat is headed due west just below the center of the channel. Hydrophone picks up another convoy, this one headed due west into the Atlantic. There's also a hunter killer group comming in from the S/W, and a single contact from the N/W along with a handfull of speed boats. The convoy contains a huge troopship, some tankers, other troop ships and assorted merchants. Oh yeah, and about 7 escorts. So lets add this up; the boat is almost out of the straight, got a convoy about ready to roll right over me Calm Seas. A S/W escape course is a death trap, no time for a N/W route. Sea is glassy, stick the scope up and you might as well fire off a signal flare to let `em know where you are. Pair of T-IV's in the aft tube, forward I have 2 T-V's, 1 T-III & 1 T-1, a V, III-F, & 1-Lut in reserve.
I could go deep and try to mouse it out. Or - maybe try a slow 10 degree turn and try to sneek in 10 o`clock high of the lead escort, just out of his arc. Get a solution on at least one fat target with the III and then fire off the acoustic's toward 2 escorts, dump the I on the target and dive under the convoy.
Fun fun fun on the Autobahn :ping:
