I guess with a gun that big you start with that and only use torpedoes to finish off crippled targets???

M2 was built with out the deck gun due to the London treaty which banned subs from carrying guns bigger than 8 inches.
The Surcouf would have been interesting to see in action in the pacific, if she hadn't been sunk on the way to America. Think what she could have done against the Japanese!:arrgh!:

Hmm, i wonder what could turn out of such models if the Germans had layed hands on them! :D

Nice, it is what u-boats needed, destroyers wouldn't know what hit them during dark. It's a destroyers killer. It would save the torpedoes since destroyers tend to zigzag all times. With that gun, no problem, they can zigzag all they like. Why didn't German built more u-boats with it? London's treaty shouldn't matter since they were at war.

i think some of you are getting confused, or maybe just me. these are british subs.
i accidently made one off these, it was the afterbirth of the playable bismarck mod. had a massive gun jammed over my deck gun, fired two shells, the reloaded.
But how will the recoil effect the sub? Especially if you fire the gun at a 90 degree angle?

I doubt the weapon could be traversed 90 degrees....more a case of the sub being pointed in the general direction of the target and the weapon being able to reverse 30 degrees or so.

The Surcouf could rotate the guns, but still only a limited axis. The weight of the guns was alot lot less than the M1 single gun. The M1 could only elevate or depress the gun and it could only be reloaded on the surface.

surcoafs a french sub that could carry aircraft, like sen toku. it had a double gun turret out front.

Even huge, the Surcouf was not a bad sub : it escaped Brest to join the FFL and it was not sunk by an enemy : it was accidently bombed by a us catalina.

Surcouf was a famous French corsair.

Robert Surcouf (12 December 1773–8 July 1827) was a famous French corsair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsair). During his legendary career, he captured 47 ships and was renowned for his gallantry and chivalry, earning the nickname of Roi des Corsaires ("King of Corsairs").

Oh of course yes, I read the thread these pictures are impressive.
It is funny though how different countries name their ships.
And I can't resist quoting that wiki article about Surcouf :
Discussing with a British officer:
"You French fight for money, while we British fight for honour."
"A man fights for what he lacks the most!"
I never realized he was the one who said that.:arrgh!:

Funny that,
On the channel Yesterday a documentary on the M1 vessel was aired. Historians went down to the wreck and found that the crew had tried to open the hatch in a last ditch attempt to get out, this was while the sub was nestled on the sea bed.
A very tragic and sad story.

Yeah, the M boats were BADLY overloaded by that 12" gun.
They were designated as "Monitor Submarines" although it was recorded at that time that; "The term is used, for want of a better one". Crew's called them Mutton boats because the gun mounting resembled a leg of mutton. As far as I can see it was an early equivilent of cruise missile submarines of today, bombarding land based targets from coastal waters. Although there also seems to have been a serious proposal to use the M boats to hunt down enemy cruisers...

The gun was seen as a alternative to torpedos of the day which were considered not to be as effective as a gun in some situations.
The Surcouf would have an interesting sub for the pacific, with little use of convoy tactics and limited escort co-ordination by the Japanese. American sub commanders had been crying out for years for bigger guns (5' instead of the 3' and 4' that were mounted) and more of them (some U.S. subs were fired with two 5' guns and rangefinder toward the end of the war and proved effective against what shipping remained)
M.2 sank when the hangar door was opened by mistake while the boat was still partially submerged...
:hmmm: My guess is.... Mr.B on duty?

Actually that is wrong. M2 was a large boat, but did not have a very high pressure compressed air system, it took a long time to fully pump out the ballast. It was routine practice that to launch the aircraft quickly they'd pump out the bow tanks first and hold the stern up on the hydroplanes while they launched, even though the aft ballast tanks were still partly flooded. It is believed that M2 was in the process of launching when her stern planes failed. She then effectivly "stalled" and sank stern first flooding the open hanger.
