My daughter (who will be accompanied by her mother) is competing in The Irish Dancing World Championships which is being hosted in Philadelphis USA this coming April.
They would like to visit New York for a days shopping during their stay.
Can anyone advise of the price of a return day ticket via rail please?

Amtrak site. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage Look up Northeast corridor.
Also, bus: http://www.gotobus.com/philadelphia/
The bus will probably be the least expensive and it delivers you right in the heart of the city to shop. This is the latest touring craze. Daily trips to and from! Looking at the bus: $12.00. My wifes friend does round trips in a day to New York to buy purses of all things. Women!

Those are my search results for Amtrak schedules. The days and time would help. Also, whether you daughter falls into the age group set for children helps.
I wish her luck in the Championships.

Good luck to her :DL
EDIT - viz AVG's post above, gotobus are pretty good.
Myself and a few mates used to pile onto the Fung Wah bus on a Friday afternoon, and go drinking all night in NYC, catching the 7am back to Boston. Good times :D

Yes, the buses are very good from what I hear. It really has become a thriving business and specifically buses going to Atlantic City. These busing run by large numbers out of Baltimore and Washington DC to Atlantic City/NY. Philly is no exception and getting scheduled on one of these should be very easy and not expensive at all.
I'm down the street from Philly, if I can help with anything at all, feel free to drop me a PM:yeah:

Make sure they go to "Pat's" for the best chesse steak in Philly. They put way more meat on them than "Geno's".

What the hells a cheese steak. :hmmm:
I've got a feeling the response is going to be something like...."steak with cheese over the top"

Oh, and BTW, young Buna got his sailing orders today, he joins his first ship as a newly qualified third officer at New York on march 15th.
Looks like old Buna is going to be the only family member not to visit the big apple this year!!

Geno's is OK if you like the meat in thick slices but the only way is Pat's he slices it thinner whick makes the steak taste so much better
