View Full Version : Who should get priority for Promotions?

I just got my first 4 promotions to hand out in the stock campaign. Is is best to promote the officers, first, then petty officers, then basic crew? Or would it be more help to promote say the petty officer who I gave the sonar skill to?
Some other noob questions while I'm at it. Is there any use in having an officer with the helm attribute? Does he help make course changes faster? I couldn't see what help he was, so I traded in the 3 helm officers at the start for 2 machinists and a repair officer. But eventually I will be able to add a second or 3rd attribute to an officer and was wondering if I should assign the helm attribute to one?
Thanks!

As with all qualifications in SH3, Helm just increases the overall level of the Control Room. Having the green bar be all the way full is all that really counts, so try to balance your officers and men to gain that result.

if i claimed a lot of sinkings with the deck gun... promotions and awards go to the crew which manned the deck gun (you will have to remember who it was or write it down)
If i took severe damage and the damage repair team took great care of getting it all fixed up... they are at the front of the line for medals and promotions.
another example... a massive storm once while recharging batteries, at the last possible second i was able to crash dive because the watch crew sighted a nearby destroyer coming out of the fog... this moved the watch officer to the front of the line for the awards.
just try to remember the crew men who were part of the action the most... and then use SH3 commander to dish out awards as you see fit.
in real life you would recommend these men to high command as being worthy of citation with awards or promotions based on their actions while at sea... your superiors would review your request and decide whether or not to promote or award the sailor which you recommended.
in SH3 you just have X number of awards and medals when you get home... a little unrealistic, but SH3 commander gets past this by allowing you to award medals and promotions as you see fit.

A good point, GR, and the realistic way to do it.:salute:

Usually I award in the following order:
Funker up to German cross (think that's what it is, the one that makes him fatigue-less) Watch petty officer is second priority for this path. Repair is third.
Everyone else is awarded on their merits, or with officers as priority if no merits have been seen, while giving priority to the above.
U boat war badges go to the officers first then the POs, then the seamen.
:woot: I just wanted to use that smiley cos I haven't yet!!!!!

I withhold all their medals and sell them on ebay. :DL
Needless to say my crew hates me.

I believe the helmsman qualification helps your crew respond to your commands faster.

That's what I was thinking.
Thanks for the suggestions on promotions everyone. I only use 4 officers so I'll give them the 1st 4 promotions. After that its the cook and then everyone named Otto:haha:

If you ask me, in each patrol i reward the men who worked harder.
Just live GR said. If i sunk many ships with eels, the promotions and medals go to the torpedomen.
Plus, i have specialized men for each job on the ship, so i have to write down only the seamen i used for an extra hand.

hehe, none of my crew works hard except the officers. I rotate crew religously. As soon as they lose 25% of the fatigue bar, I rotate new crew from the quarters. I only use 4 officers and there the ones that by the end of the mission only have half a bar left. Sometimes I run minimum crew in engines so crew can rest up. My 2 machinist officers pick up the slack for that. I consider my machinist officers my highest priority.
After all if the engines are not running smoothly they will be too noisy and I'll get ripped apart just when I was minding my own business.
But yea I'll have to promote one of the deck swabs so my crew doesn't mutiny.

Hydrophone guy is usually my priority. Then torpedo and repair.

Promotions/medals:
Officers
1. watch officer: I want them to spot things without fail and as early as possible.
2. chief: commands acted upon immediately; it doesn't matter how good the other sections of the boat are if they don't receive orders.
3. engineering officer: I want my engines to work at all times, and as efficiently as possible.
4. navigator: improves command room efficiency (and I don't want to get lost....).
PO/Crew
1. watch
2. sound
equal 3rd. command room/engineers
4. radio (improves sound room efficiency in total)
5. forward torp
6. aft torp
I tend to use the aft torp room crew as my repair team along with the weapons officer (I don't really need a wep officer, but I carry one to increase command room efficiency).
Note I use 'no fatigue' in SH3 Commander for reasons I have stated before (namely the absence of a watch system - one of the good things done in SH4 - turns the sim into a crew management nightmare to the point it's the thing I spend the most amount of time doing, and the crappy weather makes it even worse.....so I turn fatigue off). This means I can crew the main areas constantly....I have a medic and a few spare seamen in the the aft crew space so I can put injured crew there and use the 'spares' to occupy the places of the wounded until recovered.
Cheers
Sonarman first. I need to find a prey before I can engage them.
