I'm proud to announce i came across my first carrier in career:salute: lol..casablanca class...problem is i'm 14 KM out...A DD has already suspected my position..the carrier is heading north and i'm tailing and i only have 1 steam torp...(only one left) and the carrier also has 2 other destroyers escorting it...starting to wish i didn't pick it up on hydrophones. :nope:...any helpful tips other than shoot ur foot, and get a ticket home

Better just bugger out of there. One torp won't sink a carrier, although you might get a destroyer. If you try hard enough, of course

Ark Royal was sunk by a single torpedo from U-81.

If you're lucky you might be able to do it. IF you're lucky, and do it at night, up close, and place your shot well.

I'll give it my best...im tempted to reload a previous save and get in a better position

Plus, historically, a torpedo hit could potentially put a warship out of action for weeks or even months due to repairs.

Not that the game takes that into consideration, all or nothing as far as renown cares.

The game tends to smooth out your torpedo damage, not taking into account the skill of the repair crew.. bla bla bla. For this reason, carriers are nearly impossible to sink with a single torpedo

Carriers maybe, but the Casablanca Class Escort Carrier had, historically, very limited armour protection. :hmmm:
He should give it a try, maybe he can shoot that "one lucky shot".

CVE = Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable

I'd say that if you can hit it, fire away

If your determined to have a go......get into a position where you can hit her in the aft section. If you can bring her to a standstill her escorts will eventually leave her. You can then surface from a distance at night and lob shells at her.

Not very realistic, I know....but you did ask the question. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

And? Merchant ships have even less armour plating, and the bigger ones still take two or three torpedoes to sink.

One torpedo can sink her, if you catch the bow or the stern. If you hit her amidships, she probably won't sink. I sink CVEs all the time (they seem to be extremely plentiful in GWX 3.0) and I usually give them two torps - one in the bow, and one amidships. If you don't sink her, you might slow her down and separate her from her escort screen. Then, though perhaps compromising historical realism, surface at about 5km and try to get a few deck gun rounds into her - dive, wait it out, maybe she sinks, if not, rinse/repeat.

Most merchant ships aren't loaded with aviation fuel, aerial bombs and depth charges. The British CVE HMS Avenger was sunk with a single catastrophic torpedo hit.

Depending on what mod he is playing, that may not even matter.

And set your torp to run under her keel to increase your chances of a fatal hit:up:

Is it in a convoy or a task force?

I've run into task forces before but usually they are running too fast to end-around. Now guessing right with position reports and getting ahead of a task force and playing the small empty hole in the ocean game is a whole other story :D

Just had my own carrier victory. I intercepted a task force in AK 25 - based on two radio reports, I had the course and speed basically down. It happened to be perfectly calm seas, so I didn't dare approach close. Instead, I lined up the best possible firing solution I could with my approach starting at 6km, AoB ~ 90. By the time I let them LOS, I had dialed 4.6km into the TDC range. I had sent two fish - both T1 FaT 1s, with pattern activation set to 5km. She was a Bogue class and I sent one at her bow and one amidships, both 1m below keeldepth. I had a full 3 or 4 minutes to turn and dive, silent. Both fish cracked keel, and when the 5 escorts that were with her reacted, I was too far away to find. The Bogue was sniped. Nothing like CLEAN DATA!

Well, shame on me but i never approach task forces in calm waters.
Too much risk too little gain. If i have a falke on me, i do give it a shot though.
I snipe the leading escort from distance and i send the falke on to the escort carrier.
But my advice is to stay away from such task forces since you have to sacrifice many eels for 20grt max.

I usually hunt lone liberty ships, sailing just above Azores.
