View Full Version : Type II/D Hunter-Killers!
One often overlooked aspect of the uboat was was BdU's idea to use the small, yet manueverable type II/D to hunt enemy destroyers and other warships in their home waters. BdU usually selected their most daring and unorthodox captains to command these vessels as they plunged head first into the waters that surrounded the British Isles.
Destroyer captains were now finding themselves under attack as they head out into the deep Atlantic. The English Channel and the Irish Sea were no longer safe as these little submarines went about their sneaky business.:ping::arrgh!:
Of course what I wrote above really didnt happen. Its a little fluff I use in my endless type II/D campaigns against the Brits in their home waters. A nice change of pace to forget tonnage and go after the hunters. Amazing how these little boats can get away, even in shallow waters.

Ah, Type IID's, the little big canoeboats... Great fun, although the small torpedo complement means only 3 or 4 (Or 5, if you're that good) destroyers will meet their fate...
Would be cool if going after the hunters actually had an effect on the bigger picture, still fun though!

I'd like to see some single missons like this added to the great GWX Gold lineup.
Maybe not realistic but, still will give you that tense " gut wrenching fix " we love and need. :yep:
How about it ? :salute:
it is a ton of fun. and with no tonnage worries its a different way to approach the game. I edited the basic.cfg so I can get 6 eels in the boat as the voyages are rarely more then a few days. Most destroyers can only handle one good shot anyways! :yeah:
as jim said...u just gotta love em...like to sail out of france in a type II, and head to AM, and attack a convoy, easily evade the escorts and get home in time so that my crew can celebrate their victory with some french drinks and women. lol

Hey, if you're going to do something ahistorical, give yourself a good reason! I suppose when I have a IID captain mid-war I'll be getting similar orders.
You bet! I had to make a reason why I was still in this little canoe. It can get quite tense when your about to attack a destroyer and he gets a whiff of you and turns sharply at ramming speed. You can either dive or grit your teeth for a head-on game of chicken. If you miss your shot, you are pretty much toast.
Best way to play this way is starting in July 1941. That way you are already in Brest so you have easy access to the channel and Irish Sea.

I enjoy being in the Black Sea. There are some pretty big troop ships hiding in there.:D

Even more reason to drive a tiny Type II Canoeboot around :yeah:

One of the big problems with using a Type II in later war years is that you can't get deep enough to avoid being depth charged.
Early war, you can get below the depth charges at 150 meters or so. After 1941 or 1942, they'll pound you to pieces.
I haven't tried that in a career yet, usually I end up getting a VIIC before then (which would have been a historical progression). I have tried substituting a IID in some of the latter single missions, and I get my stern handed to me in situations where I could have made it with a VIIC or a VIIC/41. You just can't get deep enough in an Einbaum.
One other nice thing about the II's though: Harbor raiding. I know it's semi-ahistorical, but I justify it by rationalizing that the II's were often sent to mine British ports, and some of them got quite close. Since we don't have mining missions in SHIII, it's the next best thing if not overdone.
although they cant go as deep as the type VII and IX, the type IID has such a narrow profile I find that DD's have a hard time getting a killing blow on me, even if they have my location pinned down. Through the external camera i can see them fall all around me but not get close enough to cause serious damage. of course this isnt always the case. i have lost my fair share of type II's :wah:

My last IID carrer ended after escaping the Black Sea, fueling up twice in the Med, managed to sneek through Gibraltar, and traded in for a XXI.
The XXI was great but I think I had more fun in the Duck.

They're like the classic British two seat convertible: Limited in what they can do, and not entirely practical, but fun as Hell to drive.

I would do a TypeIIA/D career except I use the exhaust/water stream combi mod,and the standard and nearly every other skin has no exhaust port:wah:annoys the hell out of me to see exhaust smoke coming out of nowhere:damn: And before anyone say's"why don't you just not use it" Once your used to using it you can't be without it,looks just so cool:yep:

i think the reason people drive iids is because they remind them of seehund mini subs, tit wouldnt be too hard to put them in game, size them down and add 2 torps onto the sides, but rather pointless.........
