Hi everyone,
What is your best known horror movie ?

I'm the person who likes to watch horror movies right next after movies of WW2 :)

I always admire Stephen Kings works for his ability to open the purest fear in our minds.

But last night I watched Quarantine all alone at night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfUAETRhhkw

I must confess I was so damn affraid I could hardly remember when I was so much excited before, sitting in my room with my eyes wide open even after the movie for an hour or so :o
I think it is so immersive cuz it's been done in first person camera view all the time. :timeout:
Just watch it if you haven't seen it, it's really not some sort of cheap stuff

Loved Kubrick's take on "The Shining". I saw it at the cinema when I was 13 and thought WOW!
Much scarier than the usual "don't open the door! Don't do it!" teen slashers like "Scream" or "Friday the 13th". Loved the Japanese version of "Ring" and "Juon" too. Very little gore but lots of creepiness!

On the oher hand, I really love bucket o blood b grade zombie movies, especially with a bit of comedy thrown in. "Tokyo Zombie", "Shaun of the Dead" "Planet Terror" all worth a look.

I still think Alien was the creepiest horror movie for the impression it made on me at the time. The sequels kinda eroded the viseral experience of the first one. Silent Hill was another that kinda got under my skin.

There are only two that I think very really creepy, and that The Shining and The Ring.

The scariest movie I ever watched, even to this day, Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff (1963). It is a series of shorts that would have me hiding under the blankets when i was a kid. That dead lady who wanted her ring back freaked me out everytime.

1982 "The Thing" was hands down scary as hell. A remake from the 50's. This time, it was more diabolical. An alien encased in ice is discovered and comes to life. It has the ability to become any life form it has come into contact with and use that life form abilities. So, each person at this mine in the perma frost does not know if the alien has touched anyone thus being able to take their form. No one trusts anyone! Man, you talk about nuts. Best parts of the move are linked below. Do not eat anything with tomato sauce will watching:o

As for me I like horror movies which action is closely linked to happen in real life.

The best I could think of is actually a deadly viruses, dangerous genes experiments, mutating zombies and all that biohazardous threat to mankind has always freaked me out when I start to think about it, you know like in the Resident Evil 1 or Quarantine.
Who knows maybe there are already top secret military facilities somewhere, where these kind of viruses has been already developed :o

Of course that was a year ago, so no harm done.

Don't really go for horror too much, so my list is short and odd:

Fright Night
An American Werewolf In London
The Night Stalker (original TV movie which became a pilot for the series)

Good horror movie? Hmm, personally I'm most frightened when I watch a thriller that is realistic, or a documentary because I know it's about a real thing. But for fantasy, I like the atmosphere in the film Alien. The sequels are not bad either.

Alien.

I was 15 when it came out, my uncle took me to the movies to see it. I didn't sleep a wink that night besides i was staying at my uncles and my bedroom was in a sleep out about 50yrds away from the house to make it worse it was a stormy night my hearing senses was on red alert I was freaking out! :har:

''Dark waters'' Japanese version kinda found that scary in fact i reckon the Japanese make the best horror flicks. I've seen quite a few asian horror flicks over the years and each one has played with my head!

The Exorcist - another movie my uncle took me to see (man i hate my uncle :har: )

How about that Steve, it sure is dead on! Funny how stories grow and are reincarnated over and over. I guess Hollywood can use their improved movie magic. However, the real movie magic is in ones imagination! I often find the books more engrossing than anything a director can cut.

Alien is a legend, and all the parts were worth watching.

Japaneese horror movies got stuck with all that black hair thing of that too white dead girl, which I'm finding boring already.

We could honestly make a movie out of the werewolf hunt thread. We is getting into chararctor alreadies!

And I think The Thing was a very good movie, though the special effects were lacking somewhat. Is it a coincidink that there were Norwegians in the movie as well as the werewolf thread? Am I shamelessly promoting the thread as well? Too many questions folks!

Cripes man, I was eating eggs sunny-side up when Herring brought that up... Gawd! I will never be able to enjoy my eggs runny ever again. :o

On that note, we were watching The Thing on the Sci-Fi channel several weeks ago, and we had to call it a night RIGHT AFTER that scene. I was more than a little jumpy going to bed.

Great... Now whatever appetite for the eggs I am eating right this moment is gone again.

I've seen plenty of good horror movies, but the only one that ever really creeped me out was "The Sixth Sense". The unfortunate part about it is that you can only watch it once. After that, you know the twist, you're never going to be able to forget it, and it's just a fun movie to watch after that point.

Yes, that's the one. I wonder if people who have to use defibrillators have that scene at the backs of their heads. "I better watch out or it might bite off my hands".

Some movies have that power, they make a lot of people scared. Maybe Jaws was like that, people were afraid to swim in the ocean after seeing it, even up north where there are no sharks. :DL

Both deal with a horror that exsists only in the eye of the beholder, a fear you cannot escape from or defeat because it is in your own mind.

I watched Event Horizon a few weeks ago. My wife was wondering what the heck I was watching. It is a good movie and does play on the fears in one's own mind. Lots of gore in this movie. Guys ripping their eyes out :o etc. They did not leave much to the imagination on the gore. I was laid out there for all to see.

But the nature around us,who had decided to erase us from the soil.

"The Sixth Sense" was one of the few movies that actually sent a chill down my spine while watching it.

"The Changeling" with George C. Scott was another one that sent a chill down my spine.(I think they did a remake recently-Hollywood can't come up with anything original anymore it seems.)

Hate to admit it, but I really liked the original "Nightmare on Elm Street". Great premise. Of course, I haven't seen it since it came out and I don't know if I'd like it as much, but it does stand out for me.

My all time favorite has to be " The Exorcist".
Took my wife to see it when they re-released in 2000 or so with some extra footage.
Still a great movie, although my wife didn't care for it-she's Catholic and some of it hit a little close to home for her.
The sequel, "The Exorcist II-the Heretic", had to be one of the stupidest movies ever made.

As an aside-
About every Halloween time, BRAVO shows "The Top 100 Scariest Moments in Film" on TV. I watched the top 30 or so one night and was unablee to sleep afterward. :o You see all the best and scariest parts of so many movies.

One time I went swimming at night with some buddies off Long Beach Island. I was a better swimmer than them and I struck out to about 100 yds to enjoy the swells.

Something 'bleeping' nudged me! I've struck things in the water before, little pieces of garbage, a small wood plank... you know 'stuff'. This was different. I have no idea to this day what it was, but I swam as fast as a torpedo to the beach. It's been the only time I can honestly say I was truly scared in the water.:o

My own nomination qualifies as more of a "creepy" film, than a true horror movie. But not least because, at the time it was made, it was based on what was known...then...of a very TRUE story, a good part of which was still quite vague.

"Sole Survivor (1970)"

This was a US "made for TV" movie, based on the the very true story of a "lost" (and later found) B-24 bomber, the "Lady Be Good."

Sole Survivor substitutes a B-25 for the B-24, and floats a rather unique premise atop that.... Well worth seeing if you can find it*--a real cult classic.

My own favorite scene is when Brad David ("Elmo") suddenly rears up and says: "they're....they're TOUCHING me!" (memory mine, and I'll leave the explanation for those who take the time to see the film).

Note: To sit through this one, you'll also have to be willing to put up with some early "William Shatner." Sorry, but there it is. It's the price you'll have to pay.

Regardless, I think the film, overall, is still WELL worth it.

[* "Roberts Hard to Find Videos" sells it for $25 or so (VHS, US format)]

------------

Another, similar psycho drama I find entertaining would be "The Legend of Hell House."

And, as others have mentioned, "The Sixth Sense" is not to be missed either.

When I saw the title of this thread the first movie that poped in my head was "The Thing" and sure enough Warhawk mentioned it in the 4th post. Absolutly the best psychological horror movie. And in the end who is really infected. Personally I think Kurt was. In the director's cut they havea commentary on whether or not one would know he was infected or not. I highly suggest the DC with the commentary.
