:) Hi everyone :)
This game SH3 , is a strange thing . Let me explain . I have been inspired .
I have been a kit modeller for ages , hmm, about thirty years , my first model was a figure of 3 musketeers , about 10cm long . But my main building was aircrafts , from
WW2 . But now my dearest friends , I have bought me Otto Kretchmers U-99 from Revell in 1/125 scale ( it is my first sub model ever ):p2: I'm gonna put it in my living room , decoration you know:yep:
My wife axepted it:D That is thanks to the wondeful game SH3 . I quit building for almost a year now , and I never gonna be to old for this . So now I playing SH3 , and take a hour breake , to build this wonderful sub , and go back to my pc and play again . Guess one thing guys . DO I HAVE A GOOD TIME OR NOT:O: :haha:

Actually this thread belongs to the Sub models/books/films forum :hmmm: I'm moving it there, but will leave a re-direct from here.

:DL Hi everyone :DL
I should have posted this pic first but:oops:
Ok , here is the two pieces that should /maybe be Otto Kretchmers VIIB U-99 :hmmm:
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/4679/dscn0394uc9.jpg
I have mine already half-built, but I rarely get the time to work on it lately. You know, when I work on this I want a full evening with no disturbing my methodic work, time and space enough to paint and let it dry, etc. and with two little children at home this happens rarely :damn:
Anyway....
I drilled all holes in the hull with a manual bore tool and then sharpened them, and the result is pretty good. It's a lot of work, but the result is worth it, specially with kits like this which have less detail due to their age.

I have built Revell's U-99 as U-47 (with major modifications) and intend to place it on the board as diorama. If I get a chance I will try to post some pictures for ya. The model is ok but it lacks a lot of details and in some areas it is very inaccurate...

:DL Hi everyone :)
In this weekend , I don't have time to build my sub , But monday I start again:)
I have putted the two hulls together , and I am finished gluing the conning tower also , but you all must remember , I have never in my life build a sub , so I am a nervous wreck:O: Thursday I bought a new sub kit
" Revells 1/144 scale minelayer VIID " .That was a huge detailed kit , with new molds and six different emblems versions:o I begin to love build this :yep:
It's been a year since I build , so I am nervous regarding airbrush:dead:
Type VIID minelayer- superb kit. Do yourself a favour and get the new Griffon photo etch set for it. You will not regret it.:yeah:
Theres huge difference in quality of old U-99 kit, and new type VII, and VIID from revell. Im surprised people still are getting the U-99 kit. It should be banned from shops. I had it once- my first sub, and it ended at the bottom of my fish tank, where covered with algae looked like sub wreck.

:DL Hi there Siara :DL
Sorry , but I'm not agree with you in the point there you said there is a huge different regarding Revell . I think Revell is good plastic kits . The sub I have (U-99 ) is from 1976 . Ok there is a little fitting problems here and there but that's charming . You see where I am coming from NORWAY:smug: there is the kits very very expensive , so it seems that the dealers are very exact what they buying . If you talking about bad kits , then " Airfix is terrible , such their 1/24 scale aircrafts:nope: :nope: I love them 1/24 scales , Trumpeter also is terrible kits , huge fitting problems:yep: But when it comes to Hasegawa , Tamiya , Dragon , Fujimi , Eduard etc then we talking . That's extremely good kits:yep: In subs I'm not such a high detailing person , there I spend many years building one kit , that is not me . I love to build almost "straight out of the box" , so if you manage to get your kit looking very good , then you have did your job properly :) In Norway we have limited access to all of those photoetching parts , and remember not all have creditscard to order all around the world   When it comes to modelling kits , accesories , it is stoneage look like .
+ The kits and assesories are very expensive
Star Lion- you dont get it:D
I said theres huge difference between old Revell kit (U-99), and new Revell kits (VIIC, and D)
Both are revells, and both cost roughly the same price.
Read my post again.:timeout::haha:

 Sorry for the misunderstanding
I know I know .
But remember this my friend , you live in England , and I live in Norway .
In my country , is a huge different in prices regarding plastickits, it's very very vey expensive country ,, one example , your Revell 1/72 scale VIIC , in my country it cost 60£ ( 625 NORWEGIAN KRONES ) :dead: :88) :o :o :o
That kit in England cost 50 £.
Here in Spain it costs about 70 Euro :hmmm:
I guess that's because the UK and Norway are not in the Euro zone ... some drawback had to be somewhere :O:
StarLion45

:) I give up
But we can be agree that those prices are expensive
when it comes to plastic kits:yep:

:) Hi everyone:)
Almost finished gluing the sub , so now is close to airbrushing:woot:
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/1854/screenshotuboatod7.jpg
Looks good so far, I see you decided to paint after guling it all :hmmm: I glued the hull and painted it, then painted the deck separatedly and glued it. The Conning tower also has been worked on separately, and will be glued in the end.
I found out that some partes were too difficult to paint after gluing, like f.e. the platform of the conning tower :nope: so I had to paint first and then glue.
Pity you are not drilling the holes in the hull, looks excellent, though I recon it's a huge work.
Keep us updated.

:-? Ok . I am now finished airbrushing the two main colours ,
Humbrol nr.79 ( upper colour )
Humbrol nr. 67 ( lower colour )
I am satisfied so far , and I am gonna take some pics of it :)
I was thinking to add some details , but choose not to do so , because
it's an old kit , and my first uboat kit in my life  Just right out of the box .
The remainings left , is the deck colour . For the colour on the deck , I choose :
60% Humbrol nr. 112 + 40% Humbrol nr.160 . To simulate rust and stuff
That is all for now , StarLion out:salute:
I painted it with Tamiya sprays, the light grey was excellent, but the dark grey is may be a bit clear. Sadly they don't have anything darker in the catalogue :damn:
Here's a quick shot I have just taken so you can see how it came out for me (Note that the model is unfinished!)

:) Hi everyone +Hitman:)
I took a pic of the sub just now .
After finished to airbrush , and painting the deck andthose holes here it is :
I have some weathering to do , and maybe airbrush the lower colour one more time . I saw in the picture some prints , damn it I used platicgloves too:damn:
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9936/screenshotqh7.jpg
Sorry I missed the last reply from some days ago
Looks nice  but not much different from the colour pattern in mine...how about a bit darker grey on the hull? :hmmm: Still considering it for mine :damn:
A suggestion: In real U-Boats the buoyancy tanks were completely painted, not divided by the line between dark and light grey (See my model to understand it)
How did you paint it with airbrush after mounting? Did you mask it everywhere with tape? That's a huge amount of work, probably :o

02-27-09, 11:43 PM
:) Hi there Hitman
I painted it all over again , and it looks better now , I gonna take picture of it when I'm finished with it:yep:
Regarding airbrushing , it's really easy I'll explain it to you .
What I did , I airbrushed the lightest colour first all over the sub , and when the paint is dry , I mask a line hull/waterline and airbrushed with very low airpressure in all the corners and used the paint as fillers in crack and so on , and I airbrushed many coats on the darkest colour:) And at last I airbrushed " Testors Dullcoat "
all over the sub ( three coats ) so no I am gonna weathering the sub , remember it's a very old kit from 1976:nope: So I build it straight from the box:yep: The deck I hand brushed with a mixture of 60% 112 Humbrol + 40% 160 Humbrol with a little of grey and rust , and finally I airbrushed the waterline as you suggested (The tanks ) with nr 67 humbrol . So the sub looks really different from the picture above:DL

Decck, conning tower and weathering job are very nice, but they make the lower part of the hull look now too light. I would repaint it with a darker shade of grey, would make the rest of the job stand out even more :yep:
