Lets say my mission point to patrol is 10,000k away
during my trip there, i almost never find any enemy ships,, also,, sometimes a destroyer will pop up right next to me on the map,, so close i'm unable to do anything at all, and bam, i'm dead
also, my radar/radio is turning itself off, and will not go to keep sweeping.
any tips here?
thanks so much

Thats pretty far for the start of the war!

Okay first off you have to make absolutley sure that your watch crew are fresh and that your deck officer is up their watching too! There is a bar at the top of all the stations in the crew managment screens. The fuller the bar (Adding more or fresh rested crew) The better that area works. So make sure that the bar is full on the watchtower at all times so that they can see ships!
also, my radar/radio is turning itself off, and will not go to keep sweeping.
Radio does not do anything unless you want to send message or BDU sends you one.
Radar I cant help you with since ive never lived long enough to get one. Usually dead by 41'
any tips here?
Start a campaign at the begining of the war and download GWX 3.0
thanks so much

If you use high TC to go the 10 000km the game will filter out traffic to lessen the load at your CPU, the higher the TC the less traffic.
And the destroyer or plane that does not get filtered out will pop up out of the blue, as it takes some time to get out of high TC.
If the sea is ruff with high waves your radar will shut off as the conning tower gets under water.
And rely more on your hydrophone. It can listen much further (34km if you listen yourself, 20-25km if you let the crew do it) than you can see.

As a relative newcomer to SH3, I would recommend starting a career in 39 or 40 - give you time to hone all the skills you will need to survive 41 onwards.
Regarding the radar - check to see that you have instructed the radio operator to sweep continuously. Beware however that continuous sweeping gives a higher probability of being detected by the enemy, so think carefully about whether the reward outweighs the risk.
Good luck.

Look for choke points and convoy routes as well. Think if you were going to send a ship from Halifax to Bristol, how would you route it? Look for approaches to major harbors. Take note of ships you do see and mark their routes on your map. It should give you an idea of where the shipping lanes are.

If your floating out of the Bay - dosen't matter if your asigned grid is 10k away or not, just wander about in BE. Where and when in BE you may ask? That usually dosen't matter either.

In GWX their is a pull down map in the navigation screen (Top left corner) The map shows actuall shipping lanes for single merchants and Convoy routes. You should just see the tiny edge of the map sticking out, Hold down mouse button and drag map down. Their are also 3 other maps up there you might find usefull.

Well....I was actually thinking of those avatars that occasionally pop up from time to time involving brothels and a poor taste in fashion. ;)

I'd advise keeping the radar set off unless you have a sound contact for a lone merchant, and heavy fog is preventing you from getting a visual contact.
