Hey guys,

I've been having some problems with my laptop battery recently. I noticed a while ago that even when plugged in, the status readout read "97% Not Charging", but I thought nothing of it (I very rarely have it on battery power anyway)

Then, a few days ago, I picked up the laptop, and it turned itself off. I know I didnt press any buttons by mistake, it just went "Byoooo". I tried to turn the thing on again, and at first, it worked fine, I could log in, and the desktop displayed as normal. Then, the battery readout appeared, and for a split second read "0%" and the laptop again turned itself off.

It works fine with the battery removed, but I'd like to know what the hell could've happened to make the battery drain itself so quickly, and not charge again?

The laptop model is an Advent 111C (I think, the labels arent on there anymore) and I dont believe it's even a year old. The battery model is an LG Rechargeable Li-lon battery with a 14.4 Vdc rating. (If that helps any)

Any ideas?

Not that it helps KP but, the LG company is haveing some probs too.

One of the first things I bought for my laptops was bigger batteries.

I did read there was battery issues for some laptops. I'm thinking Sony in particular. I do not remember for sure. Sounds like a crapped out battery. Might google your computer for battery issues. :salute:

Hmm, do you leave the laptop plugged in with the battery in as well? My battery died because of that..

Yeah, that's probably why it died. Leaving it plugged in actually doesn't hurt it, but it makes it overheat. That just murders you battery...:nope:

Yes leaving it plugged in all the time is not a good idea.

Believe it or not the best way to keep your battery life to its longest is to use it till its almost empty then charge up fully then remove the charger.

Its the nature of these type batterys called 'memory state' here is some info on the subject. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_effect

Although it discusses NiCad's it applies to nearly any rechargable battery.

The batteries are made up of a series of cells hooked up end to end in .. well series. If one of the cells should fail it usually fails to a dead short becomming in effect a piece of wire, furthermore it drops the overall voltage increasing the currrent compounding the problem.

If it were possible you 'could' tear apart the battery case and replace the failed cell. However with the new Lithium or poly batteries they are manufactured so that they cannot be seperated. Once a cell fails the only option is to replace the entire pack. Be careful to get an exact match as these days these battery sets are alot more than just batteries. They have current limiting and overcurrent protection built in.

Good advice, charge your batteries to full capacity, then unplug them. 'Excercise' the battery by discharging fully and recharging fully. Just dont leave it plugged in for days on end.

Even more important dont 'store' the battery in a discharged state.

In the meantime Ive dealt with these folks in the past with decent results http://www.laptopbatteries.com/

Might also want to try Ebay.
