Occasionaly I will have a Das Boot moment where I get so sucked into the sim and it just feels like the movie.

Today I had a patroll out to AE71. Of course right before I arrived the weather took a turn for the worse. Visability was again almost nill and I was cursing my luck! Then BDU reports a large convoy heading just 100 kilometers north of me so the hunt begins!

Once I found the convoy it was too dark to attack. So I shadowed the convoy until dawn and headed in. Visability was almost niil still so I just headed dead center into it. the waves were massive and throwing my boat all around when my lookouts spotted a siloute against the fog in the distance. It was a corvett so I dived for a few moments and was up again on the surface when my lookouts spotted another siloutte comin at me, and then another off the port side! I turned 90 degrees port and sat for a short time before figuring my plot in the weapons officer screen and letting loose 2 in front and one to the rear. All three impacted the one in back was a heavy merchant the one in front was a Cam ship. I was watching them burn and loose steam when another ship came steaming out of the mist!

At that time the two ships I hit started firing on me so I ordered ahead flank, crash dive! But before I got under I let loose my last two forward tubes on the new mystery ship....A Tanker! Damage controll teams worked feverishly to contain the flooding as I took several heavy impacts to my rear as I was diving.
The Tanker took one head on to the bow and the other had missed although minutes later it found a new victem and sent him to the bottom. The first ship I hit with my stern torpedo finally succumbed but the other two just shrugged off my massive blows. The weather was so bad even these massive ships were having a tough time of it. And the escourts never got close as I slipped out the back.

Reloaded I head around the convoy to the front and hit her again sinking all of the wounded ships I hit the first time plus another heavy merchant! So far I have sent 40,000+ tons to the bottom! as I type this I am reloading and getting ready to hit them one more time before dark!:salute:

This is my Das Boot moment, What is yours?

Once on GWX 2 I was leaving Nazaire in massive storm conditions, as soon as I cleared the minefields I get a contact report from the watch, ship sighted at 030, 700 meters.

I go up to the deck to check the course of the ship so that we don't collide, while I'm in teh binocular view staring at the silouhette of the returning destroyer/minesweeper a blob enters my binoculars.

There was a returning VIIB less then 100 meters away moving at half ahead pitching and rolling off of the waves. After trying to turn and accelerate out of it's way we ended up colliding a bit and scraping down eachothers hulls.

On a later patrol in that same campaign I was leaving Lorient in the latewar on a IXC/40 headed off of Africa, I'm not even round the first turn off of the subpens when the RAf decides to start carpetbombing the entire harbor. The IXC/40 takes a good bomb hit and starts flooding from the aft torps to the diesel engines, another hit destroys the rear dive planes. The IXC/40 is saved only by the virtue of the harbor not being deep enough to actually sink the boat. The stern hit bottom with the bow sticking out of the surface at a 40-ish degree angle. I ended that patrol and was transferred to the Norway flottillas for the end of the war.

Well, there was this one time...

I was off the British coast, and I'd sunk something, can't remember what exactly. I'm making my escape, feeling peachy and satisfied with myself, when suddenly a pair of DD's show up, pinging away and running at a good clip. Mind you this is JUST off the British coast, outside of Southend I think, and the water was maybe 30-40 meters deep, max. No diving and sitting on the bottom here...

After a half hour or so one of them makes a lucky run, and several ashcans detonate right next to us. Massive flooding in the bow, tubes damaged, hydrophones damaged, et cetera. Repair crews get to work, and I start weaving the boat. Flooding is just under control when another run scores, this time on our tail end. Engines damaged, batteries hurt, rudders hit, aft tube gone. The repair team is swamped. I can see a light calling to me at the end of the tunnel...

Still I continue on, bravely evading...

Another hour and I've lost both my periscopes and taken heavy damage (amazingly no crewmen hurt), but now we've reached deeper waters. My Type VII is in her element, although definitely hurt. Damage is mostly under control, but I've no idea how far I can dive before repairs give out. We continue weaving at 2 knots, just enough to maintain depth, and the tincans overhead continue pinging and dropping depth charges on us. I'm blind without my periscopes, and the hydrophones aren't good enough for a snapshot at the circling ships. They were probably within the 300 meter arming range anyways.

Finally I decide to take her deep and see how far she can hold out. Slowly we make it, and at several dozen meters at 2 knots on silent running, we creep away. Finally the Brits lost us, and I listened as their pinging fades aft... Happiest sound I've heard. :smug:

Several hours later I surface and run for home at flank speed. Definitely felt good to be able to pull into Wilhelmshaven.

Ain't nothin' beats the GWXperience. :yeah:

Well I went back for my third run and picked off two tiny merchants and was well away when I surfaced low and behold the massive storm that was wailing away only moments ago was gone. It was sudenly a clear and calm night. THen my lookouts call out a destroer closing rapidly off my port. I crash dive and make it to 140 meters when he drops his DCs all over me. I manage to slip out of the mess and change angles andd go quite when he pulls around and hits me dead on with his DC's! Floodings rampant and my damage controll team is working like mad men to get everything fixed. I got all the compartments repaired but was past two hundred meters at this point. Several attepts to level off by blowing ballast and ordering flank speed failed and I go down in history. The longest career I have had to date sinking over 340,000 tons:dead:
