After owning SH III for over a year I have finally made time in my life to play it. I can only say OMG! This game is awesome. I understand now the level of enthusiasm I see throughout these many posts. I look forward to many many hours of enjoyment now. I am throughly captivated by this game.

I have been trying to understand now the GWX 3 mod. I notice that there are about a dozen or so related downloads (including numerous .bin files). Are all of them necessary to play? I'm confused as to what to download and in what sequence.

I'm sorry if this has been covered previously but I was unable to find this out via the search function. There is so much information scattered about.

Could someone please take a moment and list the procedures to successfully download and install GWX 3? If this is discussed elsewhere can a link be provided?
I thank you very much.

I'm a rookie too, so this may not be all that helpful.

YES, you need all the .bin files. Or, download the torrent as one big package so there's no messing around.

This is the page for GWX3: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=145939

Link to the torrent - http://files.filefront.com/GWX30+torrenttorrent/;12764641;/fileinfo.html

Also check out the JSGME - activates downloaded files into SH3 (must have)

Also get Sub Commander ( http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147237 ) - a must have for adjusting many settings etc.

If you're downloading the bin files, download them all as well as GWX3.exe file. Run GWX3.exe and it will handle the installation for you. Note that there are some optional mods that you can install via the JSGME mod manager. Let us know if you need help with that as well. (I personally love the 16 km visual range mod, as I have a beefy enough computer to run it.)

Welcome aboard. You are now addicted.

1. Have a clean install of SHIII patched to 1.4. If
your SHIII is not patched to 1.4 the patch can be
obtained free from Ubi.

2. Go to a GWX 3 download site and download all the bin
files and the exe file to a location on your hard drive
(GWX 3). Once all files are downloaded execute the exe
file to install.

3. Follow the install directions. You will then have two
shortcuts on your desktop one for SHIII & one for GWX.

4. JSGM (mod loader) will be loaded with GWX already.
There will be a JSGM shortcut icon. Click on it and you
can see the additional mods alread pre loaded but not
activated. To activate click on the mod on the left
of the screenand then the move arrow to move it to the
right to activate it. You must almost be in port to
activate a mod.

5. Mods can be loaded in two ways. Manual and by JSGM.
JSGM is the best because if you have a program crash
caused by a mod you can disable the mod by reversing # 4
above. Manual takes experience and knowhow.

6. Not all mods are compatable with GWX or other mods
and some mods must be activated in a special order. I believe
that most of the mods loaded with GWX 3 are compatable.

JSGM & SHIII Commander in my oppinion are must haves.

Good hunting....

what's a decent frame per second rate for the 16 km atmosphere? it seems to work ok, but the realistic damage mod slows the fps down to like 2 when i hit a ship. normally i get about 20 to 30 on the bridge, was curious to see what you guys do

try activating your sync in options. It tries to synce your frame rate to your refresh rate and it really helped in my case. Memory helped alot too. MY FPS went way up with a 2 gig memory upgrade from 756, Go figure.

20 is fine

Now that I have the vanilla version of SH III running perfectly should I go ahead now and install GWX 3 Gold? Even though I haven't come anywhere near to completing the original game should I finish it first before doing the mod?
Just wondering.
Thanks.

@ helibobber - Go ahead and follow all the great advice listed here and get that GWX Gold installed without further delay; or Donitz will have your doughnuts for little people life rafts!
GWX Gold will take the stock game to another dimension, ponder not Kaleun!
Good luck and welcome aboard! :salute:

Oh, oh. Problemo to report:
Followed the above instructions and got a successful GWX 3 Gold install.
Training missions work perfectly.
I tried then a single mission and the load screen gets about 9/10 complete and doesn't move from that point. The hard drive continues to chatter away like it was trying to complete things but nothing happens. After waiting about 5 minutes I have to reboot the computer. Tried several times without success.
This happens exactly the same while trying to load the museum too. 9/10 load up and hangs at the same point.

I am using Win XP, SP3 P4 2.53 w/1 gb ram, nvidia Geforce 6200 w/512mb ram. Plenty of HD space.
Man I'm dying to play too.......
Thanks for any help and thanks to the GWX team for their work!

I found the same thing with the museum after loading GWX3.0 In fact the first time I tried it I thought my PC had locked. Second time it looked like it was locked again but I got distracted for a few minutes and when I came back it had loaded up OK.

I too have only tried the training missions so far with GWX, so I may find I have the same issues as you when I start my career.

I think the only solution is to wait a bit longer. :)

Yep, just be patient a little while longer. It's well worth it.

Incidentally, this is the ideal time to get a cup of coffee, a beer(*), something to eat,... oh, and to 'go' before you leave port. Can't abide them sub toilets. Damn Tommies always choose that moment to dive bomb my boat... :wah:

Well guys, looks like I'm on shore leave for a while. Instead of checking for the sage advice above first I rebooted one time to many and crashed my hard drive. Now when I start up I get the blue screen of death and the message 'unmountable_boot_volume'. This after waiting over 10 minutes for the mission to load. :damn:
Looks like I hosed my HD or something something so I'm using my wife's PC to post this.

'unmountable_boot_volume'.

Possibly the most appropriate error message under the circumstances ;)

Hope you get it sorted soon, dude! :)

Success!! A little research and all I needed to do to get things back in order was to dig out my old XP disk and run the Repair console using chkdsk /r to repair my XP files.
I then fired up SHIII GWX 3 Gold but this time let it load on its own. After a while it worked! Patience is a virtue and I guess to succeed at this game you have to have a lot of it. It does take a while to load and I didn't realize just how long.
Anyway, thanks to all for your help.
Shore leave cancelled! :yeah:

Hey guys. How do you start to download that GWX 3 torrent? I usually download them all with Opera but it doesn't work here. So I downloaded BitTorrent client and tried adding the filefront URL and then the download torrent.html file to it, but it didn't work. Any hints? Thanks.

Btw, great work GWX team. (I'm also eagerly waiting for GWX4!) :arrgh!:
