Far out line -> Visual range i think on normal weather conditions, or then it is active sonar range.
Middle -> Passive sonar range
closest line -> Propably the sight where the crew can see you underwater (periscope depth without periscope up), or then it is the Depth charge run starting range.. *shrug*

At least that is the protocol i use for those lines.

Thanks for the fast freply, Walter. Any other bidders?

I think the small one you have labeled as visibility is the active sonar, where they can ping you. The next one up is the passive sonar (he can't here you from behind because of his engines) and the next one i'll have to guess at radar, I don't think it is the visual range as passive sonar can hear stuff from further out than can be seen.

Hope this helps matey :arrgh!:

I'm not sure that Japanese DD's had radar - usually only capital ships.

I always took the lines to be active sonar, passive sonar, and visual range (moving outward, smalllest to largest)

Just my 2 cents - could be completely wrong.:D

Yeah, that sounds likely, m8. Just a bit funny how nobody seems certain about it. I´ve tried locate info about this on their website, manuals etc but I´ve missed it or they havent mentioned it, I dunno...

The Japanese had Type 21 and 22 radar sets deployed on destroyers from August, 1943 ('44 for the 22). These were the only surface detection units available, if memory serves. IJN, etc., units were reluctant to use the sets as they were concerned about the enemy's ability to use the signal to successfully triangulate their positions.

Yup, Active SONAR, Hydrophone, Visual. If you are submerged and a Tin Can comes into range, listen for his PINGING. When he gets within range as depicted by the smalled semi-circle, you will hear his pings. Otherwise, no. That's why you can possibly sneak up on him from behind (submerged). His prop noise inhibits his hearing, just like yours does.

Same scenerio applies to aircraft. Generally, the higher they are flying the bigger the viewing circle. However, you are also harder to spot. The faster you are running- Flank to Slow, the more of a wake you leave and that changes your visibility to the aircraft. Just because you are inside the viewing circle doesn't mean that he is automatically going to see you. :yeah: Old_tex

silly question from a newbie - how do you get those lines?

Actually, Type 22s were put on some DDs as early as March, 1942.

Only Akizukis got the Type 21, I think. The Real IJN mod I did (not released stand-alone yet) is included in RSRDC and has the 3d models of the radars installed on all the ships at the appropriate times (so you can look at a DD through the scope and see if it has a type 13 array, or a rotating bedspring Type 21, etc :) )

Zoom in the map and click on the 'target' the circles will appear. They will dissapear if you click anywhere else on the map. At one time some mods removed these lines but they snuck back in. Personally I dont think they should be there to leave a shadow of a doubt.

Outler line is visual, second one in is passive, third one is active.

Note that the 'active' shows up regarless of wether or not the ship is fitted with active gear.

Furthermore the pattern appears to be the same regardless of what type of ship. Now a ship with an 80 foot tall super structure would have a lot more visual range than an old split freighter.

But it is what it is.

I think I only get those lines on an identified warship. Merchants still have a full circle. Otherwise it is just the big round circle.

The full circle is their visual range, which is 360 degrees.

If they had sonar they'd get that, too.

You know, I've noticed that when I go through the manual, there's lots of stuff that isn't covered at all.

I wonder why they were so horribly cheap when it came to filling out a manual about their own game...

Do any of those lines have something to do with radar? I figured some of those were radar range lines, but I'm liking the idea or watchmen visual and sonar/hydrophone ranges.

@Leon West: If I were you I would work some more on that sig picture. Way too big.

@LeonWest, I dont think Radar is showned at all. Just remeber that radar on one hand can have a looong range but on the other hand, a sub, even when surfaced, has a very small signature....

Not a good answer but at least something :hmmm:

and there is stuff covered that doesent even exist.

The manual is ... well ... not that good it was a copy paste from SH3 with some minor editing. Makes a good coaster.

At least you found SubSim :yep:

As a long time gamer I have seen the decline of game manuals. Man, they used to be great--full of all kinds of info, some even comb bound. Then, due to printing costs which began to exceed the cost of the game cd, they got smaller and smaller, many times going to only a manual included on the game cd. Even back then manuals were problamatic at times--full of repetitions and info useless to the game and obviously written by programers with no literary skills. But it was the printing costs that did them in. Ever notice how magazines are getting smaller and smaller with tiny print? So it goes...

You got that right banjo, printed manuals are sadly, relics of the past. My excellent and informative manual for Silent Service 2 was a big help in getting used to this game. It had 60 large pages of tactics and history to help you become a sub commander as well as 60 pages explaining how the controls work. It even came with a keyboard template to help learning the control keys. Ah those were the days!

My sh4 game came with a tiny 100 page picture book and a brief written overview of the game, some of which wasn't accurate.

I still have my M1 Tank Platoon, F-19 Stealth Fighter, and Silent Service II manuals. I think I have Aces Over Europe's floating around somewhere too.

Though, keep in mind that not all old school manuals were like that. Mostly just simulators...and only some of those. I don't even remember if 'Strike Aces' even had a manual at all...

Agreed, lol. Thank you all. So far my welcome here has been great (all my questions and then some have been answered quite promply and politely)

And, as for my sig I know...I really need to find a way to resize the dang thing, other than photobucket...can't seem to get it shrunk without losing the text which is from Rudyard Kipling...

May just delete it...it was a sad nooblet's attempt at a rocking signature like the rest of you have, lol.

Here...try this version. It's just a re-crop with a different typeface. Can't lose with Kipling. :)

Torplexed,

Thank you so much!

I can not believe that you would go out of your way to fix my signature.

It was very kind of you and I really appreciate it!

I've been busy for some time now, so I just not got your reply...

I tried to send you a PM so as to not keep bumping this topic, but apparently you're out of message space...

Anyways, I just wanted to thank you...it was very kind.

I've set it now, and it's much better. Thanks again!!! :salute: :DL
