Thought you guys might like to read this. It's from the Barb's patrol log, written by Fluckey himself:

Where did you find these, Luke? Did you scan and upload, or can you view patrol logs on line?

There are numerous war patrol reports online if you dig around.

Also, you can purchase any submarine's WWII war patrol reports on DVD in .pdf format (scans) from this guy:

And thus, all doubts that Fluckey could have written his own book have been removed.

One of the problems with most reports is the lack of crew lists for the patrols. When trying to build a historical picture of a typical crew for each boat, the more information the better. I wish more reports went into detail like the Archerfish captains did. It is a chore slogging through the available reports to find the ones that have crew lists. I like reading how the captain conducted operations, the ship and air contacts made, which i do for fun, but when you are looking for something else it is not fun.

Fluckey should have just wrote,"Sighted train, sank same."

This is the USS Barbarinna calling NEAL STEVENS (for the fifth time!). Post the emblem for my new Gato class boat --- the USS BARBARINNA.

(The drawing incorporated into the emblem, which no one has seen yet except Digital Trucker and me, was prepared compliments of Gunfighter.)

Thats what I was thinking, guy writes worse than I does. I meant that his writing was great. I'm surprised that the Navy let such a lively account stand. Certainly it's the most entertaining cruise report I've ever read. Most are about as interesting as chipping rust off the conning tower.

I have the entire set of WWII patrol reports from the man who runs the USS Sealion link up above. :yep: Expensive, but well worth it!

A little off topic, but this is as cool as when I found the war diaries of my Grandfather's unit in the 1st big war.

page of said war diaries; 3rd page of the report on the attack on Vimy Ridge.

The USS BARBARINNA is at sea, and here are her logo, emblem, and the captain's new girlfriend (Lucky me!).

Logo: Drawing of woman and Japanese soldiers made by an artist in the 1940s (hair color modified by Gunfighter) combined with a torpedo designed by the Gunfighter. Periscope effect added by I'm Goin' Down using tools from Photobucket.
Emblem: Compliments of Digitial_Trucker
Girlfriend: Drawing made by an artist in the 1940s.

The cook? Of course! If they were spotted and had to retreat inland the cook could make Miso soup, sushi, and seaweed salad! Toss in a little Kirin beer, and they would be on the run living the high life.

Maybe they sent the cook 'cause he was complaining about not doing anything except cook.

Best way to treat a squeaky wheel. Give 'em the gears.

They sent the cook because the captain and crew could not stand his cooking. They thought he might get shot.:salute:
