Old news perhaps but only stumbled upon this today.

http://stupidbeaver.com/world-longest-distance-kill-2-430-metres-1.5-miles/

Seems like a Canadian has broken a record that dated back to the Vietnam war.

Can one of the many Subsim experts confirm if the story is true? If so a kill of almost 2.5 kms is one hell of a shot. :yep:

I've read of this before and never witnessed anyone questioning/disputing the claim :hmm:

Against a human target, I believe this is the record.

However, it has been disputed by my friend, Sgt. Slyder, whose longest-range kill claim varies between 1500m and "like, 3 miles!", in direct proportion to the number of beers he has had and the number of girls listening to the story.

It was a link from the Wiki page on the McMillan Tac-50 sniper rifle.

Yes, this story is true. The sniper who took the shot was eventually ordered a bronze star by the U.S. military. He eventually left the CF after he was questioned about reported inappropriate conduct by snipers. Here (http://www.macleans.ca/canada/national/article.jsp?content=20060515_126689_126689) is a good article about it.

Yep. Aside from the CF's equivelant of an 'honourable mention', the only recognition he obtained for this incredible feat was from another nation's military. Interesting culture we have up here.

Maybe there should be a different category for .50 cal - sniper kills. Doesn't seem all too 'fair' to compare long distance kills with different calibers.

Well I've read that the previous record holder, Carlos Hathcock, made his shot with a specially modified .50cal machine gun, so it would be the same calibre. Still, though, it's a good point. Artillery can kill you from a lot further away - should it still count? No way.

Furlong -- Bronze Star winner and Canadian war hero -- lives a life of relative anonymity. Even when his world record somehow became Perry's property, he chose to keep his mouth shut. "It's quiet professionalism," he says

Now that is one hell of a soldier:up:

A single round direct fire? I'd count it.

A great story with a tragic ending. The guys are heroes no matter what. But if you become a "political problem" you're toast..............
