View Full Version : British S-Boats... Unsinkable?
Hi all! =)
I was on my way back to Wilhemshafen when my look-out spotted a surfaced sub. We maneuvered into firing position at his stern and after IDing it as a British S-Class submarine we opened up on him. The firefight so far lasted for around 30 minutes. The enemy is dead in the water, lost it's weaponry.
He got hit by ca 40 8.8cm shells and 120 3.7cm rounds, plus 2 torpedo hits. And his is still refusing to sink! I rammed him right in front of his conning tower... no effect. :shifty:
My boat, after slapping patching on the holes he shot into me, and fixing the equipment, is running low on ammunition. I got 2 heavily wounded men on board and hull integrety is down to 60%.
Anyone has any idea whats going here? hehe

Weird. Are you hitting the waterline? Did your torps detonate prematurely?

1 exploded premature, one missed and 2 hit it dead center. Just put another one in it and it's still afloat. :damn:
The guns hit it all over the place, mostly water line.
Waiting for reload of the torpedoes now, since weather got to bad for the guns :shifty:

Just goes to show how tough us Tommies really are
The AI boats do have a tendency at times to be slow sinkers :yep:

Tough cookies, them Tommies.. ;)
Anyways, I disengaged after I hit 2 more times with torpedoes and rammed it aft of it's conning tower and tried to push it under the water, which didn't work either... :nope:
Stayed around for around 1 hour overall (incl TC while torp reload).

Did you receive the message "She's going down" :hmm:

Nope.. no message, but some debris floating around the sub.
EDIT: Oh and it's on GWX 3 and SH Commander.

I've never had any problems sinking submarines in single player missions. :hmm: Maybe they were smuggling ping pong balls?

........or a secret cargo of life jackets :hmm:
I got into a gunfight with an S-boat once near Brest & it took me a hell of long time to sink it. I ran through over 100 rounds of my 8.8cm ammunition as I was trying to stay at a relatively "safe" distance; out of easy range of her guns. I wasn't about waste a torpedo on such a puny target & I just couldn't hit her guns. The S-boat finally did succumb after about 20-25 minutes (real time). Whenever I encounter them now I avoid engaging them as the risk outweighs any possible reward. They're like MTB's in that you want to swat them but could wind up getting badly stung in the process.:nope:

Perhaps it's like an Ice carrier, only a submarine. Us Canadians are pretty crafty...

Hehe... are you reffering to this crazy project...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Habakkuk
Though it was a british guy that thought it up, which makes sense, you would have to be a little eccentric to come up with something like this. But it was going to be built in canada, we had plenty of pulp.
I sunk a UK sub once, it took a long time to sink but I only had to use one torp...
Weird.
Great story about the habakkuk. A bit crazy, but great!

Strange... Only once i encountered an S-sub and i got it down pretty fast...
I just got behind it, approached, blew up its flak guns and the rest was a piece of cake.

Hmm weird. I sunk a docked S-class in Blyth harbor with one eel.

I "sank" one with around 12 rounds of deck gun ammo. I got the credit for it, but it didn't go under the waves!

Strange S-boats... i got one yesterday in a convoy. Scored a perfect hit an him but he refused to sink. He´s perfectly swimming around like nothing happens... As he started to open fire i turned quickly away from, take cover in the rain and heavy fog.
