ahoy, i just thought it was worth mentioning this small point as I hear so much praise on this site for the GWX team and deservedly so  .
As you can see from my joining date ive knocked around this site for almost 5 years now so i know a bit about Sh3, not so much the modding side of it but the playable side anyway, my job takes me away quite alot so i only get to visit the site every so often.
Anyway, to the point:-
Ive been serving in submarines for the last 9 years now and I remember back in 2002 when I was on HMS Tireless and we went to America to sink the USS Wainwright on an excercise, i remember it well, going to action stations, the sound of High Pressure Air as the eel left the submarine, and then everyone in the control room watching the Pericam (Periscope Camera), the 1st torpedo hit and everyone cheered a bit, the second missed (god knows how, it was a stationery target).
Any modern ship would have broken in half but the Wainwright was built a long time ago and she stayed afloat due to her hardened materials.
Anyway, my point being having been in the water when it happens for real i didnt get that feeling that i do now when i intercept a target, line up, check my data and then fire off my eels and wait for that all important sound of the target breaking up and then the cheer of my boys before the chief gives them a quick b@llocking to keep the noise down :yep: .
Thats my point Kaleuns, having done it for real, GWX gives you that much more that makes it feel better than real, they give you the realism, the achievement and that rewarding feeling all nicely wrapped up like a little bag of realism and so do all those other modders out there.......great work GWX and all the others modders out there that bring SH3 out of the dark depths and back into the waves of glory!

I think your thread reflects what we all feel about
GWX and the DEV team.
SHIII and GWX are great but...
It's the fact that you actually served on the real thing that makes the sim so real to you. Your brain looks at the computer screen and brings back all the senses you already experienced. For example, I've never been on a warship, I've never smelt that oil mixed with the motion of the ocean, so for me a computer sim is nowhere near the real thing. Did I make sense? :D

Nope, never did. Nor have said I've served there.
But be my quest, go say to an uboat veteran that "our mod/game is just how it was back in your days" and you get your balls kicked to your throat if not by the guy, I volunteer to the job. :yep:

Bubbleheads can say what they want. It's not the same thing as being on a practice dive or being under a hostile warship that tries to kill you.
So, all I'm asking is a wee bit respect to those who went thru the hell. A computer game cant come nowhere near it.

You know I think SHIII and the GWX has created such a real immersive experience that it transcends just a sterile virtual game experience and had made me really empathize with the those involved. I have felt both sheer joy in sinking a ship and than remorse for doing so. I have felt the horror and hopelessness when hearing several pings zeroing in on me. For the most part I have taking away from my SHIII game experience a better understanding the brutal nature of naval warfare. I have played many naval war games and sub simulations and none of made me stop and rethink about the consequences of sending a vitual torpedo towards some nicely render pixels. Mys thanks to all those responsible for creation of the GWX mod.
Besides GWX, the closest I've come to the real thing was a tour of the USS Torsk, a Tench class diesel sub. She wasn't underway, of course, so I didn't get a feel for how that would have been. Boy was she cramped, though! She's one of the big fleet subs too, I don't want to even imagine how bad it must have been on, say, a German type VII boat.
Though, it was still cool to touch a real WWII sub.

Absolutely NOT.
Great hearing from someone who has been IRL submariner. Cheers!
