Hi, new to SH3, enjoying it immensely, finally sunk my first 2 ships last night on my third patrol :-)
I have two questions -
1 - Are patch 1.4b and 1.4 the same? I believe 1.4b adds multiplayer functionality, but my install already has this ..
2 - For my sins, I downloaded SH3 from Steam. Is it still possible to install GWX over that (and hence the question about which version I am running!)
thanks in advance, apologies if this has been asked before.

On the new dl and discs, 1.4 and 1.4b are the same.
GWX should be added to a fresh, unmodified install of SHIII.
Here is a suggestion: play SHIII unmodified for a while to get used to the game in a much easier state. After you feel comfortable, then install GWX3.0
Right now, go to your Ubisoft folder on your hard drive, copy the entire, unmodified SilentHunterIII folder to a DVD and rename it:SilentHunterIII_new.
When you get ready to install GWX, rename your installed version _old, copy the new to your Ubisoft folder, rename it, delete or rename your SH3 folder in your My Documents folder, and then install GWX3.0
Welcome aboard!

Actually, you don't even need to change folders or anything. Just create a backup, and install 3.0 in your steam folder (It doesn't work outside it)

Aye aye, I tried that. I made a backup of my existing SH3 install
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Silent Hunter III\
and pointed the 3.0 installer at that (I've installed into C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\GW Silent Hunter III).
Now, it's installed something alright, I get a new icon on the desktop ("SilentHunterIII with GWX 3.0"), but when i launch, it starts Steam and loads up my original version. I don't get a new loading screen either.
I have been know to not follow simple instructions, perhaps this is me doing it again ..?

Are You running Windows Vista Or XP?
If its Vista you will need to Run
your GWX3.0 exe File As Administrator,
This will help Compatibility Issues,
Only with Vista,
Hope this helps.

Don't change the folder name, just copy and paste it for backup, and then install 3.0 directly into the silenthunterIII folder.

Teehee, told you i couldn't follow simple instructions. I'll try that when I get home from work tonight :-)
Update: Yep, that worked! It still connects to Steam (does anyone know why, and would it have a performance hit ..?)
Thanks!

From the GWX websit (available by clicking on my sig)
Installation of GWX on Widows VISTA
Perform the following steps if you are installing GWX in a Windows Vista® environment, assuming you have already executed Steps 1 and 2 in the Basic Installation procedure:
1. Unistall Silent Hunter III
2. Delete the residual Silent Hunter III installation folder and all contents
3. Delete (or at least rename) your “MyDocuments\SH3” save game folder
4. Delete the “C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\SilentHunterIII” folder and all its contents, if it exists.
5. Reinstall Silent Hunter III. The GWX Team recommends you install it outside of the “\Program Files” folder
6. Right-click the 1.4b patch “.exe” file and select “Run as administrator”
7. Install the patch
8. Verify you installed the patch correctly by running the game.
9. If the game fails to run, download and install the StarForce Vista update from the StarForce developers’ site: http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvup.zip.
10. You can now run optional tools like SH3 Commander, JSGME, SH3Gen, etc. provided you run them as an “Administrator” after you have installed them.
The GWX team recommends reading up on the Microsoft Vista “User Account Control” and “File Virtualization” features for greater familiarity with Windows Vista system security issues that may affect Silent Hunter III.

Jim,
I just acquired a new computer with Vista, so I sprung for a new disc of SHIII; it cost $10 and came without Starfarce and patched to 1.4b.
This installed without a hitch, and patched to GWX 3.0 Gold without a hitch.

Just Remember With Vista
In Your UBI Soft Folder,
At The top,you will see Compatibility Files,
When Uninstalling SH3,before A clean Install,
Delete Those Compatibility Files,
With Vista this is for All Games you Run.
Install your SH3,
Now your GWX3.0exe File,
Run It As Administrator,
You now have a Vista Compatibile Game :arrgh!:

Quite likely a silly question, but want to confirm. The downloaded version of Sh3 from Steam does not come with Starforce correct?

It shouldn't.

hey, i need some help from you guys here in the forums. i followed the steps to succesfully install GWX into my steam sh3. however, when i finally finished the download, the SH3 with GWX appeared on my desktop. But, when i clicked on it, it said that it didnt have the right operating system (i have a windows 7) and when i ran my steam SH3, it just opened the vanilla SH3. Im lost at this point, so i tried to unistall the installed vanilla game, and now my icon for GWX doesnt work, and my steam SH3 is screwed up. Can somebody please help me??? i really enjoy the GWX mod, and all i want is for someone to explain step by step how to get the mod working for steam SH3. Please, i love this game and if i could get a few replies, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

It shouldn't.
Can anybody help me out with my game? I followed the steps above at the top of the page, and i successfully got GWX installed. But, when i clicked on the icon, it said the operating system wasnt right, and when i ran my steam SH3, it opened up the vanilla game. So, i was panicking, and uninstalled the installed SH3, and now my GWX icon wont even work, and my steam SH3 is now messed up. Can someone help me??? i just need someone to message me or post in this thread what to do, like step by step. I love the mod, and i would greatly appreciate help from a few fellow gamers.

I'm just installing GWX on my Steam SHIII myself, so am no expert. I don't know how to uninstall the GWX mod, but I suspect that if you will delete the SHIII folder in your /steamapps/common folder (in Program Files/Steam or Program Files (86)/Steam), and then delete the other folders mentioned earlier in the thread, you can reinstall the Steam version by opening Steam and then right clicking on SHIII and selecting properties, click on the Local Files tab, and click the Verify Local Game Cache. This will redownload all the game files.
THEN, when you install GWX, you have to make sure you point the installer to the right folder. It will look for SHIII in the default Ubisoft folder, which you don't have. You just need to browse to your Steam SHIII folder and let it install there. That's what I did, and it worked for me. I can start the modded game with the GWX desktop icon.

The GWX mod can not be un-installed.
You'd need to do a fresh install.
It appears you didn't even install GWX as far as I can tell from your post.
Where did you get the files and how many did you get?
On installing GWX you should see the whole install along with sounds and images.
Did you see those?
There has been a few inquiries about re-doing the install package to update it
to better fit the Steam and Windows Vista/7 issues.
As I don't have a Steam install? I'm not sure it's worth the effort on my part at this time.
It would also require MANY re-uploads of files already out on the 'Net.
Get one wrong file downloaded?
You have more issues to try to correct.
IF someone provides me a Steam version?
I'll build a special install for Steam users.
Other then that you'll need to read threads carefully and wait for help.
